Saturday Clockwatch

Sat 29 Dec, 06:11 PM

  • All times GMT.

1658: That brings to an end this afternoon's clockwatch on what has been a breathless afternoon of football, especially in the Premier League. The headline-makers will be West Ham who have put a dent in Manchester United's title bid with a 1-0 win. However, the game of the day was without doubt at White Hart Lane where Tottenham beat Reading 6-4.

1657: The final whistle has gone in the big match in League One and it is 10-man Swansea who have taken the glory, beating Leeds 3-2.

1656: It is also full-time at Fratton Park, where Sunderland's north east rivals Middlesbrough have beaten Portsmouth 1-0. That could be a big win for Gareth Southgate's side.

1655: And the final whistle has now gone at the Stadium of Light where Roy Keane's Sunderland have grabbed a much-needed victory.

1654: Daryl Murphy bustles past Danny Gutherie and fires home to give Sunderland a 3-1 lead against Bolton.

1652: The final whistle has now gone at Upton Park and West Ham have grabbed a famous 2-1 victory against Manchester United. Ronaldo could have sealed the win with a penalty, but Alan Curbishley's side battled back for victory.

1652: Luke Varney scrambles his effort home to grab a last-gasp equaliser for Charlton against Leicester in the Championship.

1651: And the final whistle has gone at Stamford Bridge where, despite a brave display, Newcastle have lost 2-1 to Chelsea.

1649: Sam Allardyce is livid on the touchline as Kalou's goal looks more and more like giving Chelsea the three points against Newcastle. There is now only a couple of minutes left at Stamford Bridge.

1647: Dan Shittu heads home a late consolation goal for Watford against QPR. The Hornets currently trail 4-2.

1645: Hameur Bouazza has been dismissed for Fulham against Birmingham after receiving his second booking for a late challenge on Franck Queudrue.

1643: Salomon Kalou runs onto Michael Essien's deflected shot and places his effort past Shay Given to give Chelsea the lead. The Ivorian is a lucky boy as he was at least four yards offside there.

1641: Berbatov outmuscles Ingimarsson and bustles into the Reading box before firing a powerful effort into the back of the net. That is the Bulgarian striker's fourth goal of the afternoon.

1639: Mark Noble's free-kick from the right flank is met by a looping header from Matthew Upson, which beats the despairing dive of Kuszczak to give West Ham a shock lead against Manchester United.

1637: Robbie Keane's penalty for Tottenham is saved by Hahnemann, however the ball rebounds to the Irish striker who fires home to give the home side a 5-4 lead. I don't think there has ever been a more entertaining 10-minute spell at White Hart Lane!

1636: Mark Noble's corner from the right is headed home by Anton Ferdinand to equalise for West Ham against Manchester United. The young centre-half did superbly to beat Wes Brown in the air.

1635: Jamie Cureton's close-range finish has pulled Norwich level against Wolves in the Championship.

1633: It really is incredible stuff at White Hart Lane at the moment! Steed Malbranque latches onto Tom Huddlestone's pass and glides a superb effort into the back of the Reading net. The away side cannot hold onto the lead for more than a couple of minutes at the moment.

1632: And another goal has gone in at White Hart Lane! Dave Kitson storms through on goal and dinks the ball over Paul Robinson to put Reading, one again, ahead against Tottenham.

1631: Bradley Wright-Phillips has grabbed his second goal of the afternoon to pull Southampton level against Barnsley.

1630: Berbatov has scored his hat-trick by firing a curling effort past Hahnemann from just inside the Reading box. What a game at White Hart Lane!

1628: Dave Kitson heads home Nicky Shorey's corner to give Reading a 3-2 lead against the club he supported as a boy, Tottenham Hotspur.

1626: Cristiano Ronaldo steps up to the spot and sends his effort wide of Rob Green's right-hand post. That was an awful effort from the Manchester United winger.

1624: A long ball into the West Ham box has struck Jon Spector on the arm to give Manchester United a penalty and a great chance to double their lead.

1623: However, Bradley's brother Shaun has just missed a great chance to give Chelsea the lead against Newcastle. The former Manchester City winger sent his close-range header straight at Shay Given.

1622: Bradley Wright-Phillips has pulled a goal back for Southampton against Barnsley in the Championship.

1619: Ryan Shawcross, with his seventh goal of the season, has given Tony Pulis' Stoke the lead against Plymouth in the Championship.

1617: Sebastian Larsson fires home from 20 yards to equalise for Birmingham against Fulham. Alex McLeish's side needed that goal.

1615: Kevin Phillips has put top-of-the-table West Brom into a 3-0 lead against Scunthorpe in the Championship.

1612: Nicky Shorey's corner is headed home by Ivar Ingimarsson to give Reading the lead against Tottenham at White Hart Lane. That was poor defending from Juande Ramos' side.

1611: Charles N'Zogbia breaks down the left flank and plays the ball across the Chelsea six-yard box, where Nicky Butt is on hand to scramble the ball over the line. Could Newcastle be set to grab a shock result at Stamford Bridge?

1609: David Clarkson has driven home to give Motherwell a dominating 4-1 lead at home to Dundee United in the SPL.

1551: Swansea may be down to 10 men but they are now 3-1 ahead against Leeds thanks to Jason Scotland's strike on the stroke of half-time. However, you can't write Leeds off, they are kings of the late show in League One.

1550: The half-time whistles have now gone in all this afternoon's Premier League games and so far it is a good day for a lot of the teams at the bottom of the table. Although, that could all change in the seconf 45 minutes.

1549: Robert Koren storms through the Scunthorpe defence and fires his effort past Joe Murphy to give West Brom a 2-0 lead at home to Nigel Adkins' side.

1547: The half-time whistles have gone in the matches at Chelsea and Tottenham in the Premier League.

1545: Sylvan Ebanks-Blake's penalty is saved by Russell Hoult, however the Plymouth striker is on hand to score the rebound and draw the Devon side level against Stoke.

1543: Bolton are back in it against Sunderland. El-Hadji Diouf's curling free-kick evades everyone and goes straight into the back of the home side's net.

1542: Swansea may be 2-1 up against Leeds, but they have now been reduced to 10 men. Dutch midfielder Ferrie Bodde has been dismissed for a crude challenge in the centre of midfield.

1531: Blackpool, fresh from drawing against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Boxing Day, have the lead against Colchester thanks to a goal from Scott Vernon.

1529: Ruben Palazuelos has given Hearts the advantage against Falkirk in the SPL.

1526: Michael Essien runs onto a long throw and taps the ball into an empty net to give Chelsea the lead against Newcastle. That was shambolic defending from Sam Allardyce's side.

1524: Dennis Lawrence heads home Paul Anderson's corner to give Swansea a 2-1 lead in their big match at the top of League One against Leeds.

1523: The action is under way at New Meadow in League Two and John Sutton has struck to give Wycombe the advantage against Shrewsbury.

1501: Chelsea are forced to make wholesale changes against Newcastle because of injuries and suspensions.

Goalkeeper Petr Cech, Andriy Shevchenko and Frank Lampard are out through injury while suspension robbed Chelsea of the services of Ashley Cole and Ricardo Carvalho.

Hilario replaces Cech and midfielder Michael Ballack starts his first game after a long-term ankle injury. Wayne Bridge, Julian Belletti, Mikel John Obi, Shaun Wright-Phillips and Tal Ben-Haim are all used.

Newcastle's under-pressure manager Sam Allardyce leaves Mark Viduka on the bench along with England striker Michael Owen but there is a place in the starting line-up for former Chelsea winger Damien Duff.

1500: Inverness striker Graham Bayne starts a game for the first time for almost two months as he joins Marius Niculae in attack for the visit of Kilmarnock in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League.

The Romanian has been operating as a lone forward of late, but player-manager Craig Brewster makes the decision to revert to a 4-4-2 formation in a bid to get back in the winning habit following the Boxing Day defeat to Falkirk.

Bayne replaces Roy McBain from that disappointing result, with the midfielder failing to make the squad. Kilmarnock are unchanged from Wednesday's 2-1 victory over Hibernian.

1459: Motherwell manager Mark McGhee gives a vote of confidence to his players by naming an unchanged side for the home match against Dundee United in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League.

The Fir Park side have suffered back-to-back defeats against Falkirk andRangers but McGhee, who has taken Motherwell to third place in the SPL, decides against making any changes.

United manager Craig Levein, who like McGhee has been linked with the Scotland vacancy, makes just one alteration to the team beaten by Celtic on Boxing Day, with Mark Kerr coming into midfield in place of David Robertson who drops to the bench.

1458: Celtic keeper Artur Boruc returns for the Clydesdale Bank Premier League clash with bottom side Gretna at Parkhead.

Birmingham manager Alex McLeish unsurprisingly names an unchanged side for the visit of the Cottagers, who have failed to win away in the league in 16 months.

1455: Portsmouth, looking for their first Fratton Park goal in six outings, restore John Utaka to their starting line-up but are still without injured defenders Glen Johnson and Noe Pamarot as well as flu victim Pedro Mendes.

Kanu and Benjani Mwaruwari keep their places up front despite Boxing Day's draw with Arsenal being Pompey's fifth consecutive home league game without scoring.

Manager Harry Redknapp gives the combative Richard Hughes another run in midfield - at the expense of record signing Sulley Muntari who only made the bench.

Defeats by West Ham and Birmingham over Christmas plunge Middlesbrough back into relegation danger and they show four changes - with former Pompey hero Gary O'Neil returning from hamstring trouble to replace suspended George Boateng.

Robert Huth replaces David Wheater at the back while Egyptian Mohamed Shawky and South Korean Dong-Gook Lee are given rare starts, with Jeremie Aliadiere also injured.

1450: St Mirren manager Gus McPherson names an unchanged line-up for the visit of Aberdeen to Love Street in the SPL.

Aberdeen boss Jimmy Calderwood makes three changes to the team which laboured to a draw against Gretna on Boxing Day.

Scott Severin and Chris Clarkare fit enough to return to the side while Daniel Smith si promoted from the bench. Jackie McNamara, Andrew Considine and Zander Diamond remain on the sidelines.

1449: Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill restores Curtis Davies to the starting line-up in the only change from the team that drew 4-4 at Chelsea on Boxing Day.

With Zat Knight suspended after his dismissal at Stamford Bridge, Davies steps up off the bench as his replacement, with Stiliyan Petrov among the substitutes after recovering from illness.

Wigan boss Steve Bruce names the same team that beat Newcastle 1-0 three days ago, with Emile Heskey still unavailable despite earlier hopes of a return from a sprained ankle.

1448: Jermaine Jenas recovers from an ankle problem and is in the starting XI for Tottenham in their Premier League clash against Reading at White Hart Lane.

Christian Nade, Andrius Velicka and Eggert Jonsson all drop out with only the latter making the bench.

Following their 1-0 victory over Inverness on Wednesday, Falkirk manager John Hughes saw no reason to alter his side for the visit of the Tynecastle club.

Falkirk are looking to continue a good run of form which has seen them win four out of their last six SPL matches.

1442: The team news is starting to come in for this afternoon's 1500BST kick-offs and we will start with news from Sunderland's clash with Bolton.

Sunderland boss Roy Keane hands Kieran Richardson a first start since August for their must-win clash with Bolton.

The former Manchester midfielder, who returned from a back injury as a substitute against his old club on Boxing Day, is included along with Liam Miller after suspension and striker Andy Cole as Ross Wallace, Martyn Waghorn and Dwight Yorke make way.

Bolton manager Gary Megson makes three changes after keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen recovered from a wrist injury to retain his place.

1300: Burke's bustling run down the right flank is halted by a strong challenge from Gathuessi. The Rangers winger has looked dangerous so far today.

1258: There is a bit of scuffle at Easter Road as Daniel Cousin pushes Rob Jones after tangling with the Hibs defender.

1257: At Bramall Lane, Shaun Derry plays Shaun Scannell through on goal, however the young Crystal Palace striker can only fire his effort straight at Kenny.

1256: Not much has happened at Easter Road since Naismith's early goal and it looks like Rangers are quite happy to sit on their lead at the moment.

1253: In the Championship, Crystal Palace waste a great chance to test Paddy Kenny as Ben Watson sends his free-kick well wide of the Sheffield United goal from 20 yards.

1252: The half-time whistle has gone in today's early kick-off in League Two and so far it is goalless between Grimsby and Lincoln.

1251: Rangers are still on top at Easter Road, however the Hibs defence appears to have tightened up and is now keeping the away side's attack at bay.

1249: Back in Scotland, Thierry Gathuessi's cross has been turned behind for a Hibs corner by Alan Hutton. However, Felipe Morais' flag-kick from the right is claimed with ease by Allan McGregor on the edge of his six-yard box.

1247: Matthew Lawrence's cross is headed straight into the arms of Paddy Kenny by James Scowcroft from just inside the Sheffield United box.

1246: The action is now under way in Yorkshire and Crystal Palace are currently enjoying an early spell of possession.

1245: The teams are out at Bramall Lane for the clash between Sheffield United and Crystal Palace and the Blades' former manager Neil Warnock has received a warm welcome.

1243: Rangers are on top at the moment and if they carry on like this they should be able to put more pressure on Celtic in the SPL title race. Burke in particular has impressed so far.

1240: GOAL NAISMITH! Burke storms down the right flank and plays the ball across the Hibs six-yard box where Steven Naismith is on hand to fire home. What a start to the game for Rangers as they look to go top of the SPL.

1236: Barry Ferguson cuts in from the left and fires a powerful effort just overHibs' bar.

1235: Chris Burke tumbles in the box under Lewis Stevenson's clumsy challenge, however the referee waves play-on and Rangers have no penalty.

1234: It has been a low-key opening to the match at Easter Road with the returning Kevin Thomson booed every time he touches the ball by the Hibs fans.

1229: The action is under way in Scotland as Rangers look to go top, for now at least, with victory at Easter Road against Hibs.

1224: Sheffield United boss Bryan Robson has changed his front-two for today's clash with former manager Neil Warnock's Crystal Palace side.

The Blades' leading scorer James Beattie has been ruled out for six weeks with a knee injury and Billy Sharp has been dropped to the bench, allowing Rob Hulse and Jon Stead to start in the only changes to the side which drew with Blackpool.

Palace are unchanged from the team which beat Coventry on Boxing Day as Warnock returns to Bramall Lane for the first time since leaving in the summer.

1218: Rangers have made just one change from the side who beat Motherwell for today's Clydesdale Bank Premier League game against Hibernian at Easter Road.

Charlie Adam misses out with a thigh strain and is replaced by Brahim Hemdani. Lee McCulloch is free from suspension but a calf injury keeps him on the sidelines, while Jean-Claude Darcheville is named on the bench after missing the last two games following a family bereavement.

Hibs make three changes from the side who lost to Kilmarnock on Boxing Day. Thierry Gatheussi, Dean Shiels and Filipe Morais are drafted into the starting line-up, in place of Kevin McCann, Merouane Zemmama and Guillaume Beuzelin.
