Solberg looking for 2009 drive

Eurosport - Mon, 29 Dec 17:54:00 2008

Petter Solberg is looking around for a new employer for the 2009 season following Subaru's exit from the sport.

RALLY Petter Solberg - 0

Petter Solberg has confirmed that he is free to drive for any team in the World Rally Championship in 2009, and is looking for a seat.

Solberg was still under contract with Subaru for 2009, but confirmed on his website that he has been released following the company's shock decision earlier this month to axe its WRC programme.

Yet with most teams having already selected their drivers, the Norweigian's options look to be limited for the new season. The Citroen Total WRT and the BP Ford Abu Dhabi WRT, for example, have already confirmed their line-ups.

It had been thought that Solberg, the 2003 world champion, might stay with Prodrive and compete in an Impreza WRC 2008 in 2009, possibly alongside Mads Ostberg under the Adapta World Rally Team banner in what was originally intended to be a 'B' team for the Japanese manufacturer.

But with just a few weeks to find a seat, Solberg has confirmed that he's unlikely to get anything in place before the rally season opens in Ireland in January.

"At the moment nothing is decided for 2009 and further," read a statement on Solberg's website.

"However, it is not likely that Petter will be in Ireland in the end of January 2009, due to tight schedules."

It now seems though that he may be considering other options, and with his former team-mate Chris Atkinson having concluded a deal to drive for Citroen's new M2 team on the Rally Ireland, it seems alternative possibilities are out there. One possibility is the Ford second-string team, Stobart Ford, which is yet to confirm its line-up for the new season.

  3. Spunky (love the name heheheh) you are very correct. Petter like his bread and butter but was unable to give them the jam. Development needs a good mechanical technician mind which Petter never had. Roo shud have dumped him in 05 and he may have gone to Citroen then, if he had he would be a good foil for Seb and still have a seat today.

  4. Eleana is spot on in my opinion. Lovely guy and a great personality for the sport in general but... Nowt since his 2003 championship and a proven inability to develop a car into a winning product has turned him into a has-been driver unfortunately. People forget his 2003 car was largely developed by Tomi Makinen which meant Solberg could just hit the ground running. But ever since having to rely on his development input all Subaru WRC's have been dogs and their lead driver just couldn't cut it developing it. Not sacking Solberg at the end of 2005 was Subaru's biggest mistake and has been a key lead to their demise into the current situation. Again, in my opinion anyway.

  5. Unfortunately - as good as he is for the sport and wonderful with the supporters, he has gone past his sell-by date. You need to have victories to keep the seats warm of any team and he is too many years without. Thank for the good days Petter. Now take up another role - how about rally raid?

  6. please let one of the only two left pick solberg up . He's the modern day old school rally driver ( yes i know that doesn't make much sence) . He'll slide slip and bounce his way over a stage and at the end of it still look like an funfiled school kid . He make rallying fun , win lose or draw , the sport will be at a major loss without him
