Moustachioed Briton Nigel Mansell streaked to the chequered flag in our poll of the greatest ever Williams drivers.

Our Nige took 41% of your votes with 3,160 of you placing the 1992 world champion ahead of Frenchman Alain Prost, who polled 24%.

Damon Hill, another British world champion, took the final spot on the podium with 12%.

Mansell had three spells with Williams, between 1985-88, 1991-92 and for a final short spell in 1994, when he replaced then-rookie David Coulthard for the final three races of the season.

Bushy-browed Mansell won a total of 31 of his 191 races, amassing a total of 480 career points, and was a recent inductee to the International Motorsports Hall of Fame.

  2. I am very surprised that the result of this poll has­ Alain Prost in second place with 24%. To the best of my­ knowledge the Professor only had one year at Williams­ (please correct me if I am wrong). he is the classic­ case of a driver who steps in to the finest car of its­ era and steers it effortlessly to a Driver's World­ Championship. Please don't get me wrong, A Prost­ was a great driver and all that, but I agree­ wholeheartedly, A Jones' achievement must have­ ranked above A Prost's. As has been noted here very­ accurately, A Jones' tenure at Williams is receding­ back into the 'Dark Ages' of F1 fans'­ memories, and I know members of the Williams team­ supported him to the death at the time. Nigel does take­ the biscuit, though, I cried with him in 1985 when his­ tyre blew in Australia, memory is clouded, but somehow­ I think we saw that live in the UK, heady times.

    2. Your right about him not being the finest­ driver of all time, He is the guttsiest driver of all­ time.
    Senna was the finest driver of all time.
    And a­ sad loss to formula 1 when he died.

  5. Jonesy every time. He took the team from being a bunch­ of backmarkers to winning the title. Developed the FW07­ into a winning car and wrang the neck of everything he­ drove (apart from the ghastly Beatrice Haas).People­ didn't vote for him because he was successful in­ the 80's and not many remember him, but he was a­ great driver and a real character - ask Nigel Roebuck.

It is very interesting to note that Nige would have won­ three World Championships under Bernie's 'Gold­ Medals for Wins' rules suggestion, instead of the­ 1992 title he won with Williams Renault. I appreciate­ all the comments about Alan Jones, Ayrton Senna, Keke­ Rosberg etc., but Nigel was the superstar in the­ Williams car. Who rembers Migel winning in Brazil on­ his maiden outing for Ferrari, in a very fragile John­ Barnard Special on its first outing. Il Leone!

    1. Nigel Mansell is not­ Williams best driver? and;

    2. Nigel was not one of the­ finest racecar drivers of all time?

    To win the F1­ World Championship in 1992 and the Indycar Championship­ in 1993 was a stunning achievement (one Oval race he­ led from start to finish in 1993 was the best racing I­ have ever witnessed, magnificent and brave), any­ detractors are only jealous of his drive,­ determination, skill, and of his lifetime achievements­ (he's a darn good golfer, too).

  12. Look all you Lewis Hamilton haters, Hamilton is­ champion end of get over it.
    Did any of you forget that­ Charlie Whiting cleared Lewis in the race then that­ ruling was over-turned by some stupid stewards who­ haven't got the credentials to even give a correct­ and fair ruling if it slapped them in the face.
    But hey­ lets see if we can have a better year in formula1 and­ lets see full racing slicks all drivers aids gone and­ some wheel to wheel racing in the days of The great­ Senna and Mansell.
    It would be great to see some­ propper racing and end this rubbish.
    Then it will be­ down to driver gutts. You see it is easy to keep­ harping on about it is unfair this went wrong, that­ went wrong. If we have the stewards keeping their noses­ out of real racing and let the drivers argue it out on­ the course, then the right driver will win the­ championship.
    You will have to forgive me but I am so­ fed up of hearing about Marion harping on about­ Hamilton being a cheat it is old news Yahoo should barr­ him.

    My question is, what is the truth?
    If­ you say it's that McLaren cheated, then why­ haven't the stewards examined the footage of the­ race and made a decision to take the WDC away from­ Hamilton?
    They seemed awfully quick to demote him­ during the season, especially when they saw him making­ mistakes.
    Can you answer that please?
    I'd be­ interested to hear your explanation.

He complained he­ could not race drivers that way, He was reffering to­ Senna driving wheel to wheel and he new Senna would not­ back off, in just the same way Mansell would not back­ off. To be top driver you have to have the B...s to go­ to the limmit. Mansell had bigger B...s than all the­ rest.
