McLaren deny new engine deal

Mon, 30 Jan 16:25:00 2012

McLaren have played down contacts with Formula One's planned new engine maker Pure amid lingering speculation about the Mercedes-powered team's future supplier.

McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton of Britain steers his car during the qualifying for the Indian Formula One Grand Prix at the Buddh International Circuit in Noida, - 0

"McLaren has had absolutely no contact with Pure for many months," a McLaren spokesman said.

"Moreover, the contact we did have with Pure, many months ago, was of an entirely informal nature, and was merely a courtesy gesture."

Italy's Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper reported that Pure, led by Jacques Villeneuve's former manager and team boss Craig Pollock, had been sounded out as possible replacements for Mercedes after a new V6 1.6 litre turbo engine is introduced from the start of 2014.

McLaren's former shareholders Mercedes have sold their stake in the team since buying 2009 champions Brawn GP and renaming them Mercedes GP.

The Mercedes deal allowed McLaren free engines until the end of 2012 and then a supply until at least 2015 at the going rate of around 8 million euros a year.

McLaren have also been linked to Honda, who powered them to titles with the late Brazilian Ayrton Senna and Frenchman Alain Prost between 1988 and 1992, but the team said in November those reports were wide of the mark.

McLaren managing director Jonathan Neale said at the time that the team, who have champions Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton as their drivers, were entirely focused on the relationship with Mercedes.

Williams FW14b as I say you know #uck all, Ferrari along with Mercedes will have their own ride height suspension already for the first race and it will not be controlled by no silly piston as you seem to think, ask Aldo Costa what he has just brought here to Brackley an Idea from Ferrari.
Domenicalli sent the F.I A a dummy Williams FW14b, they never had the intention of using a (CONTROLLED reactivated ride height suspension.

they will have acces to mercedes engines, but they will not be the main partner (and implicitily the only ones benefiting from the shared experience and know how), which is what they really want. i understand them not being very happy about it, but what are their choices really, if they want to continue their competitive form? as i have seen in a comment, BMW (if they decide to return) could be a nice choice, Volksvagen (in the same wishfull thinking spirit), Honda...... ferrari engines will damage the reputation, and will have effects (commercially), renault already provides enough teams, cosworth - not up to their standards just yet, and P. U. R. E. , well, a new born with youths inherent problems

Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali said at the team's media Wrooom event in Italy on Wednesday that there had been correspondence with the FIA over the matter. "What you are talking about, is more related to having stability under braking," explained Domenicali. "It is a system that I know there have been some documents in writing between the FIA and the teams. We are waiting for the final confirmation if this kind of devices will be acceptable or not. But for sure we are looking around these sorts of devices to see if they contribute to a performance. But we need to wait and see what will be the reaction to the FIA on that." Well I am not the only one believe me. I have met and see the other side of a person and have great pleasure year after year in reminding him of treatment given to the less unfortunate.
Well as for the RIBS argument it has nothing to do with me, but I can understand why the arguments carry on. Well like you say this a F1 forum, so please tell the others that RUN from the discussions they have started and go onto something else because they get tied up with fellow posters who know more than they do.

At some point Mclaren will need a new engine supplier. instead of stealing information from Ferrari, all they have to do is order an engine from the same Ferrari. Simple.

Actually. I was referring to your suggestion that it would be a drain on Williams resources, it will cost little; if any more, than the Cosworth engine.
And remember Williams are the only team to manufacture their own KERS. So they cant be that hard-up EH?

Yes Engine prices have never been cheaper and I believe we owe that to Max "I love being spanked" Mosley, but we would leave that discussion for another day.
I am sure it is not about the money for McLaren but so far that seems to be the only reason I can imagine that would make McLaren jump ship for a possible free engine!!!

    From jjjones10000, on Tue 31 Jan 8:52
  16. It's only a matter of time until McLaren no longer have access to Mercedes engines. Setting aside the nostalgia associated with Honda, wouldn't it be interesting to see BMW jump back in as a motor supplier to challenge their national rival. It wasn't so long ago when they were the strongest motor on the grid. The R&D involved could serve their street cars as well.

From victordinusa, on Tue 31 Jan 8:26
  17. $8m isn't a huge deal for McLaren, but it's 8 million more than all the other big teams are spending.
That could prove to be vital R&D money in the championship race late in the season.

  20. i tend to agree #12 V for Vandetta, people try to keep a lid on these sorts of things but with the rules changes forthcoming for 2014 teams would be foolish not to start negotiations and research as to who may provide the best equipment. They certainly are not going to start throwing away free engines for 2012 but you can bet come June of 2013 the McLaren will probably be looking a lot different ahead of the 2014 season.
