Six Nations - England call up Waldrom and Banahan

Sun, 29 Jan 20:45:00 2012

Thomas Waldrom and Matt Banahan have linked up with England's Six Nations squad in place of injured pair Luke Narraway and Henry Trinder.

Thomas Waldrom, Leicester Tigers - 0

England's first match of the competition, and their first under interim coach Stuart Lancaster, comes against Scotland at Murrayfield on Saturday.

Gloucester pair Narraway and Trinder were due to be part of the senior squad ahead of that match but will remain at their club for treatment on respective calf and ankle problems.

Narraway's absence opens up a space for Leicester's Waldrom to come in as a number eight, while Bath's Banahan comes in to cover at centre and wing in place of Trinder.

Both incoming players played for England Saxons in their 23-17 win over the Irish Wolfhounds at Exeter on Saturday.

Lancaster is already preparing with for the Calcutta Cup clash without Toby Flood, Courtney Lawes (both knee), Manu Tuilagi (calf) and Tom Wood (foot).

  4. Carla, you're also calling for no slating, got it! Sorry!!

  5. Adrian, sorry mate, I disagree, I don't believe in slating, or brickbats for that matter! Carla, not sure what point you're trying to make. Maybe you mean sledging which is altogether different, not sure what the connection between slating and dedication is.

As for the tennis, best man one. As this is a rugby forum though, can't wait for the weekend! Come on Richmond!!

    And England of course.

BigRich, I get your point but the team sheet is not just a bunch of young guns.

  6. Scotland is a hard place to go and win a test. Especially on a cold and uninviting day which it will be. The Scots will be relishing the task of getting stuck into a team full of 1st and 2nd caps. Still, this does not look like the stodgy England that Scotland have learnt to handle. Draw last outing in Edinburgh. Could be as close.
Wales will struggle in Dublin. Lydiate is out and the Irish back 3 are good. Rhys is not there to push that attack up either. Bookies reckon Ireland. I reckon Welsh confidence will just take it.
France. They will not trip up again to an Italian side who start 6 nations slowly. Nothing is easy in international rugby anymore but I reckon a pretty safe margin to Les Blues leaving them top of the table for Wk2.

I'd rather not comment on Wayne Rooney's Wig's clear lack of rugby knowledge or who England call into their squad but as this has become a debate on the outcome of the 6N, I'm in !
If Wales win in Dublin (and thats 50/50) then its theirs for the taking, although France remain favourites, with England, Scotland and Ireland scrambling for 3rd as there's not much to choose between them.
Scotland at home will take a very inexperienced England side. Youthful enthusiasm will count for nothing in a packed Murrayfield against a side hurting after losing a WC game they know they should have won.

  8. No SLATING please ! If TRULY a lover of rugby ,a good match is to be appreciated from whoever it is played by!
DEDICATION to the game in hand is the first priority, that is what Novak has shown us recently in Tennis !

  9. Philip-sorry mate i disagree-he needs slating. If it was a fist offence then i would agree, forgive & forget. But its not-time to take the brickbats.

Wayne Rooney`s Wig - just for info I'm not a Scotland van, I'm England through and through, however I do stand by my statement regarding this weeks games.

Think France will be good against Italy.
Wales in Ireland will be tight, game of the weekend I think, think Wales should have too much in their arsenal.
England at Murrayfield will be tight as well, would not be surprised to see Scots edge it.

Obviously heart wants an England win but head says at Murrayfield with Scotland still stinging from WC and all disruption in England squad that the Jocks will edge it, but I think it will be a very hard, possibly inflamatory game.
I just hope it is decided by clean rugby and no dubious calls and decisions - may the best team on the day take the cup.

We just need this to be a really positive 6 nations for the good of rugby itself, there has been too much negative press and silly antics recently. Lets hope the rubgy speaks for itself and stirs the emotions how it should.

  11. On Armitage, no need to slate the guy, the man's been punished. Let's move on. And as for England not being able to help themselves, the rest of the squad seem to be behaving themselves.

  12. Thats right Vicky Vee (post 16), its Englands fault Armitage is a idiot.

Do you not think you are kinda being a bit too general?

The mans a idiot-go to the Yahoo page about him & you will see that most people (incuding us English) agree & want him out.

From adrian, on Mon 30 Jan 21:11
  13. TBH, i dont cae who wins the 6N this year, so long a that pompous, smug idiot, Andy Robinson, gets hammered by all!! Its not an anti scotland thing, just personal!!
Most coaches know when they are up against a better team, but not andy and his rose tinted spectacles!!
RE Banana-man - why oh why oh why - surely there myst be someone better than him - someone from a local under 11's team perhaps?? He has the agility of a barge and the rugby brain of a child!

From Stephen, on Mon 30 Jan 20:44
  14. The competition is pretty open as far as I can see, shame Armitage has let himself down, but England don't need people who can't control their feelings no matter how good under high ball in attacking in space. Good swift strict but fair response from Saxon's.

Looking forward to the opening salvo's. France are on to win the competition if they don't choke, they have a fortunate draw with three games at home. Wales should be their stiffest competition, however Ireland will surprise everyone. England are the clear under dogs, but who knows what Lancaster can do? Banahan, well not sure on his call up. If they play him correctly he could be an asset. He's difficult to stop if he's just recieved the ball ten yards out. Scotland and Italy will have to fight for the spoon. England will play an expansive game this weekend and if Scotland can contain them then they could take the game.

All the best to all. Game on.

I don't particularly like either player (both shouldn't be playing for England) but they've only been called up for cover after all!

What amuses me is you lot keep going on about how you're going to walk the whole thing and wasting your time rubbishing England as you normally do. How sad! You just can't help yourselves can you?

England could finish last and it wouldn't really matter. You can take the mickey all you want but if you don't come up with the goods you're going to look even more look stupid than you all sound!!!

I see a certain Mr Armitage has been arrested for ASSAULT, seems England really cannot help themselves.

  20. Why oh why do England keep going back to Banahan, he is average at best and certainly doesn't deserve an international place based on his club performances. Most recently against Northampton over Christmas/New Year when Bath were getting a stuffing he went seriously AWOL and away at Leinster the Irish backs made him look the slow ordinary player he is when in the centre, they cut the Bath backline to shreads and he looked out of his depth. I would have hoped the new England coaching team could have found a bright new wing prospect to call up so that they get a taste of international rugby, however with Waldron glad to see him elevated, always get some serious go foward when he has his hands on the ball.
