Gaffney: Bring On The Ospreys

Sun 30 Mar, 06:09 PM

Saracens director of rugby Alan Gaffney insists his side's 10-try demolition of Leeds was the perfect preparation for next week's Heineken Cup clash against the Ospreys.

Francisco Leonelli grabbed a hat-trick inside the first 32 minutes as Saracens recorded the biggest Guinness Premiership win of the season.

And after a 30-3 defeat to the Ospreys in last week's EDF semi-final, Gaffney insists the Men in Black will be a different proposition at Vicarage Road next Sunday.

He said: "This result was huge for us in that it gives us confidence to play the way we want to play and the way we know we can play. It also gives the players confidence in themselves.

"I thought Francisco had a great game and he ran some really good lines off Brent Russell. He was good under the high ball and was strong in defence - he's got a high skill level.

"None of the results went our way yesterday but we've just got to keep on winning to give ourselves any chance. It's a hard task to qualify, especially with just four games left.

"It's going to be tough picking the side for next week's game against the Ospreys."

Leeds were already staring down the barrel when prop Nick Lloyd crashed over on six minutes after a powerful rolling maul.

Leonelli grabbed his first try of the season shortly afterwards while centre Adam Powell got in on the act.

The home team secured the bonus point when Leonelli was put over by Brent Russell before the Argentinian wing grabbed his hat-trick just before the break.

The onslaught continued after half-time as lock Hugh Vyvyan latched onto Kameli Ratuvou's grubber kick who then turned finisher himself.

Fly-half Glen Jackson, who kicked eight conversions, was set up by replacement Andy Farrell for a score and, although Stuart Hooper grabbed a consolation try for Leeds, Saracens did have the last word through Russell.

And Leeds director of rugby Stuart Lancaster believes his side were made to suffer for the Ospreys defeat last week.

"I thought Saracens were outstanding," he said.

"I suspected there would be a reaction from their (EDF Energy Cup semi final) defeat to Ospreys and we copped it.

"We looked like a tired side and the boys are devastated in the changing room.

"The result is hugely disappointing. Given the effort we've shown over the past two weeks this is a massive setback in terms of the season.

"The important thing for us now is to remain competitive. We've got to get over this quickly as we've got a huge challenge against Bath in the European Challenge Cup (quarter finals) next weekend."
