Robins chief hails Downing effect

Wed 30 Apr, 03:15 PM

Cheltenham chairman Paul Baker insists manager Keith Downing's job is safe regardless of what division they are playing in next season. The Robins face Doncaster on the final day knowing a win would be enough to secure their League One status for another season.

Downing took over the Whaddon Road reins from John Ward late last year and has since made a strong impression on his chairman, who insists Downing's job is safe regardless of whether the Robins' relegation fears are confirmed.

"Keith has been a breath of fresh air," Baker told the Gloucestershire Echo. "Some of his signings have been superb and I think generally speaking we have seen better football. Even if we go down, it's still been a fantastic effort by Keith and Bob Bloomer (assistant manager)."

He added: "The amount of money we get from the Football League would decrease significantly," he said. "But we have been relegated before and bounced back and we would do the same, so it's not the end of the world.

"If we stay up, we will be absolutely delighted and if we go down we will be shattered and disappointed, but we will regroup and move on."
