Colchester striker Teddy Sheringham has revealed his disappointment at ending his professional career with relegation from the Championship.
The 42-year-old joined the Us from West Ham in the summer, but could not help the club avoid the drop down to League One.
Despite enjoying a trophy-laden career, Sheringham does not regret making to move to Layer Road.
"It's been disappointing for the last two or three months with us being relegated and it's been a sad season. It never really got going, even though it started quite well," he told the Essex Gazette.
"I'm very disappointed with the way it's gone. But I've had a lot of good ones over the years and I suppose it just tells me that it's the right time to retire.
"I don't regret coming to Colchester United. It's just that I couldn't produce and we couldn't produce as a team and that's the disappointing thing."
