Newcastle boss Alan Shearer has assured Ryan Taylor and Kevin Nolan they have a future on Tyneside.
The duo were dropped by The Magpies manager for Monday's goalless draw with Portsmouth, with neither even making the bench.
The pair were signed for a combined £7million by previous boss Joe Kinnear in January, but Shearer chose Alan Smith to occupy the centre-midfield position.
But Shearer has set Taylor and Nolan the task of getting themselves back in the team as Newcastle fight against relegation.
"There will be other chances for them," Shearer told The Sun.
"Alan Smith gave us everything in midfield and fully justified his selection.
"We just wanted to try something different."

i can see newcastle being relegated unless these big money players pull something out of there backside at the weekend
Newcastle deserve nothing more than relegation, for 5 years they have been a complete shambles.
Newcastle united are as pantomime on and off the field I for one hope they are relegated for the way the treated big Sam, how ironic that he has guided Blackburn above the mighty magpies.+
#4 has a point.
After all the @#$% that's gone on at Loony Toons, the owner/directors deserve the championship, half of the players too.
But NOT the FANS. The toon army are some of the best/loyal fans in the country & THEY deserve the prem.
Good luck from a Red Devil, pity you can't beat 'pool tho :-)
you guys talk as if the championship is a poor level of football.
alan smith 55k a week of @#$%!!!!!!fergs ripped ya big time

Well said mate. There are some real doughnuts on here, who don`t have a clue about what they are talking about.
I think Newcastle will win every game after they loose to Liverpool ..
NO CHANSE FOR NEWCASTLE ...
GOOD NEWS TAYLOR AND NOLAN - you have a chance of playing in the Championship!
alan shearer a proven manager no he is merely a pundit these days ashley s a joke clutching at stars i feel disapointed inn shearer for going there he should have waited until they were relagated and had new owners now the first thing he will have on his managerial record is a relagation
why they give shearer the job?
just to give the fan HOPE
nothing else
anyway, he did a good job for a rookie manager that has relegation-threatened team
i don't blame Smith n Shrearer but those don't understand the passion of football should not be allowed to play.to play for such agood club is not just what nolan n taylor should do they should fulllfil their importance to the tem in and out the pitch.
alan shearer ho many people will you give hope or rely on for hope?newcastle is going down no stopping.they are not going to beat liverpool so lets face reality and think of how to come back to the premiership when relegated.all this stupid talk on having faith is annoying.all the 90mins of pitch play determines and so far newcastle faith is going to relegation from the 90mins of pitch play
Alan Shearer, The Premierships leading goalscorer by a country mile, even though he had 3 seasons off with injuries, former England captain, and now a premiership manager. And you call him a loser, Jesus, there are some muppets around here. He's been left a poison chalice of players who couldn't tie my boot laces, never mind his, and you see it as his fault. If we go down, and we may, he'll get us back up, with new players who want to play for Newecastle, not mercenaries loke Owen. LOL!
Good Luck But................?
You'll be trying something different in the Championship.Loser.
"Try something different" - that worked then!
