Premier League - Successful surgery for Jagielka

Eurosport - Thu, 30 Apr 18:15:00 2009

Phil Jagielka's knee operation has been declared a success as the Everton defender comes to terms with missing the FA Cup final.

FOOTBALL 2008-09 Premier League Everton defender Phil Jagielka after rupturing ACL against Manchester City - 0

The 26 year-old underwent surgery in London to repair the ruptured anterior cruciate ligament he suffered in the defeat by Manchester City last weekend, when he collapsed with no opponent near him.

The injury has ended the England international's season and therefore ruled him out of the Cup final showdown with Chelsea at Wembley on May 30.

Jagielka admitted that he "cried and cried and cried" when he realised that the greatest moment of his club career had been snatched from him.

And he received support from club-mate Mikel Arteta, the Basque midfielder having suffered a similar injury earlier in the season which has also ended his campaign.

Arteta telephoned the former Sheffield United defender to wish him well earlier in the week.

Jagielka said: "Mikel rang me and it was nice to speak to him.

"He was there at Wembley for our semi-final win over Manchester United to see us get through, but he was obviously gutted that he wouldn't be there in the team for the final.

"Now I'm in the same boat, so it's nice that I've got someone going through a similar situation. He is obviously a month or two ahead of me (with his rehabilitation) so he can help me and guide me along the way when I'm feeling down."

  3. jagielka is 1 of the best defenders and most underrated stars of he prem. im surpriesd he isn't the number 1 defender 4 england. hes been consistent for everton up until now and his work rate isfantastic. he is also very noble as he is hardly ever mentioned in the press for his great performances. its twats like ronaldo and drogba who get all the bloody credit when they get nudged and go rolling over every single time. i wish some1 would break their legs 4 real. that would shut the arrogant twats up

  12. Sad about Jagielka but I think Everton has the resilience and team spirit to overcome his loss. However, the final against Chelsea will be one of the most formidable tasks Everton has ever faced and it will take some luck and endurance to succeed. Everton has done amazing well this season considering its many absences but the game against Man City did prove that a small squad suffers badly when faced with many games and especially when the recent opponents were Man United and Chelsea.
