Transfers - Gossip Shop: Everton eyeing Owen

Eurosport - Thu, 30 Apr 16:41:00 2009

Of all the clubs in all the world, why does Michael Owen have to be courted by this one?

2008-2009 Newcastle United Michael Owen - 0

With Owen's Newcastle deal expiring at the end of the season, it is Everton who are set to step in and bring the former England striker (in fact, just make that former striker) back to Merseyside on a free transfer this summer, according to the Express.

Like so many Liverpool greats, Owen was a boyhood Evertonian, but seeing as he left Anfield some four-and-a-half years ago and the Reds have won the Champions League since then, he might be spared the 'Judas' tag and hanged effigies prompted by so many other inter-city turncoats.

The Toffees are both too skint and too sane to match Owen's current £100,000-a-week wage, but a hefty signing-on fee and a cutback on all those helicopter journeys could be enough to tempt Owen on board the good ship Moyes.

Portsmouth are pretty hard-up too at the moment. So hard-up, in fact, that they are touting around right-back Glen Johnson for £16m, so says the Daily Mirror.

What's that? Did somebody say overpriced England nearly-man? That'll be Tottenham Hotspur pushing themselves to front of the queue then. Liverpool and Aston Villa are also hovering around, no doubt waiting to drive a harder bargain once Johnson turns Spurs down.

Already managing a squad that boasts a whopping 15 different nationalities, Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez wants to make it a sweet 16 by signing Marseille midfielder Lorik Cana, the Albania international who has been instrumental in Marseille's surge to the top of Ligue 1.

Former Birmingham City forward Mauro Zarate could be on his way back to the Premier League if he doesn't sign a permanent deal with Lazio. The Argentine has made a success of his loan spell in Serie A, further inflating his already high self image to the point where he wants £70,000-a-week, a figure the Roman side will struggle to meet.

Manchester United target Franck Ribery has heaped further pressure on Bayern Munich by claiming he will think about leaving if the club do not qualify for the Champions League. However, United will face a fight from Barcelona, Ribery's preferred destination.

Finally, Manchester City playmaker Elano is being extra nice to manager Mark Hughes after the Brazilian announced his desire to sign a new contract with the club.

  3. by the way i have alot of respect for Everton and their manager who is one of the best. he surely knows better than to sign Owen - surely the stupidest manager in the league would possess the fraction of intelligence needed to realise that Owen has lost everything that made him the talent he was, but has the support of the media and an agent capable of getting him wages that he dosn't even come remotely close to justifying. owen himself, should be a big enough and modest enough man after all this time, to step away from bleeding respectable clubs dry knowing he is WAY PAST HIS SELL BY DATE!! Buts hes not, and should be ashamed.

  4. i really hope this is hot air this article. and i really hope it isn't true that the little bench warmer has been pocketing £100k a week to, err, warm a bench. why are managers interested in him? of course he will accept another ridiculous contract to top up his already massively bloated retirement fund - especially as he knows that he will have all the time in the world to think about his race horse collection. hes an expensive, constantly injured liability who lost his pace YEARS ago and has now lost his eye for goal as he rarely bloody plays!!! if he had any decency he would accept a massively reduced rate as he must know hes gonna play a few games a season. but of course he wont. and the media will still back him. brilliant. well played Capello says i.

  5. Always injured and cares more about horses now, thats what the poeple round him say, and y would everton want another injury prone striker on the wage bill.

  7. Micheal Owen was once the greatest talent this country had seen. After countless injuries two very bad moves (Real Madrid, Newcastle) Everton would be a great club for him. However Micheal Owen has lost his legs and his eye for goal. Charlton are ready with an offer he might be able to score us in League one. I doubt it. Good luck Everton put him on a three year contract and he will only play half a season.

Owen is a class act - if he is fully fit - he is in the top 10 strikers in the world - never mind the Premiership - Capello would be a fool to continue leaving out of the England squad. Just because the rest of the Newcastle team are losers doesn't make Owen one - see you all in the Championship next season mighty magpies ha ha ha especially Mr Smith - come on Leeds !

  12. I'm an Everton fan living in Sydney, wondering whether I've stumbled into a parallel world where things are made of cheese.. As I no longer have the benefit of the News of the World to enlighten me, can someone explain the cheese reference?

Having stayed up all night watching Jo bumble shots against Chelsea that I'd have fancied scoring, I'm rather hopeful that we won't waste any money on another striker who couldn't find the back of the net with a heat-seeking missile.

  15. In my opinion, a striker should have also that body-built to muscle his way in. I do not see that in Owen. Ofcourse the injury factor should also be taken into consideration. In such case, Owen would not be a good investment.

From Jojo S, on Thu 30 Apr 1:46PM
  16. owens still has one phase of class left, a new change of senery and a look at saha could be enough to get him playing

  18. ADVICE TO EVERTON - DONT!

Owen for any amount of money (incl his wages) is not worth it. This guy is constantly injured and when he is fit is low on confidence.

This guy is not Beckham who is always in good shape and comitted. Owen's position is about sharpness, speed, agility and a razor eye. He has lost these attributes.

Time to leave the past, and leave Owen for a promoted side who have to take the risk

  19. Everton need to ponder on this one, apparently it's going to be a very hot summer and with him being made of cheese that's a risky combination.
