Youga targets first-team spot

Charlton defender Kelly Youga has set his sights on becoming a first-team regular under Alan Pardew at The Valley next season. The 22-year-old left-back spent the first half of last term on loan at Scunthorpe before making a big impact upon his return to south-east London in January.

Youga made 12 appearances during the run-in, and having since signed a three-year deal he is eager to cement his place in the Addicks' starting line-up despite competition from Ben Thatcher, Aswad Thomas and Grant Basey.

"I'm used to fighting for my place so it's not a problem for me and I'm confident I will be the number one left-back," he told the club's official website.

"I've worked hard over the last three years so it's a good achievement for me to be handed a new contract. The staff have been good with me, especially Alan Pardew. He called me back from Scunthorpe and he gave me an opportunity in the first team.

"He's now given me a three-year contract and I think he would have been hurt if I hadn't signed because he has faith in me. I signed because I am loyal with people who are loyal with me."
