FIFA Congress approve '6 plus 5 quota' resolution

Fri 30 May, 04:27 AM

SYDNEY (AFP) - The FIFA Congress passed here Friday a resolution for a quota of six home-grown players and a maximum of five foreigners in club football teams.

Sepp Blatter, president of football's governing body FIFA, has been seeking the introduction of the quota to protect the identity of national teams.

The resolution was passed here by 155 votes to five with 40 abstentions by Congress delegates.

The resolution enables Blatter and his UEFA counterpart, Michel Platini, to explore all possible means within current laws to ensure the objective is met.

The European Commission is opposed to the FIFA move to curb the number of foreign players appearing for club sides, warning that it would break EU labour rules.
