Ashley seeks Newcastle sale

Sat 30 May, 11:06 PM

Newcastle owner Mike Ashley has revealed he wants to sell the club "as soon as I can".

Earlier this week Ashley apologised for mistakes he made during the season which ended in relegation from the Barclays Premier League.

Now he wants to offload the club and recoup some of his massive investment. "It has been catastrophic for everybody. I've lost my money and I've made terrible decisions. Now I want to sell it as soon as I can ... advisers will be appointed shortly," he told The Sunday Times.

Ashley had sought a buyer last year, following supporters' angry criticism after Kevin Keegan's departure from the club. He now regrets buying his 100% stake in Newcastle in 2007.

"Of course I regret it," he said.

"I never said I was an expert in football clubs. I was just a fan - although a very wealthy fan. But I'm not so wealthy now. I put my money into it and I tried my best. But I accept my best was woefully short. I am genuinely sorry for everybody about what has happened."

your quite right, ashley bought into rot,as a fan he wanted glory for nufc, but the advisors and managers at this club abused his naevety,150 staff, yes 150,and not one of them was prepared to wise up mr ashley, unfortunately the left overs from freddie, who no doubt were still recieving instructions on how not to assist mr ashley, and, ensure that he cocked up,big style, freddie is waiting in the wings his work is done.
freddie will buy back, and guess what his best mate, yes best mate keegan might well be reinstated,"what do you reckon".!!!!!!!!granny

Have you noticed that out of the three relegated clubs West Brom and Boro have had more sympathy about it than you. In fact most of the football fans in this country have been laughing at you, now you cannot use the manu jealousy bit, what the hell have you got to make them jealous?. Relegation or not i do not see any big name managers queuing up to manage your club, why ???, the fans, passion no doubt, but you are also real nasty, the abuse from you is second to none, death threats etc.. Everybody knows that if you are not Geordie you will not be welcome, the championship is harder to get out off than staying in the PL, and i think you have much to fear, ie a Leeds. Ashley did not come to wreck the club, nor did Wise, don't you think other people read these forums, players, investors etc., what kind of signals do you send?. Start all holding your hands up and say enough is enough and stop pointing fingers, you have all gone down together, you can only come back together otherwise you are doomed to years and years of second rate football.

To Yahoo/Eurosport, I find it very upsetting and offensive that this story and Newcastle are still listed under the Premiership. This story should be in the Championship section! Then in 2010 the league one section!

It's an insult to all Premiership teams including the biggest team in the North east Sunderland!

Poor journalism guys. As soon as the final whistle blew against Villa Newcastle should have been put in the Championship section. I tfind it very upsetting and distressing that this has not been the case. I think I will contact my lawyer and sue sombody about this!

  17. Mr Ashley you got NUFC into this mess and you want to cut and run?.Its a bit different running a football club compared to a "pile them high, sell them cheap"retail group isnt it ?.A bit late to show contrition now isn't it?.Weasel words from a "man" with all the charm of a worn out bog brush and wants to leave it to some one else to sort out.

  20. As long as we (that is the loyal fans) keep up our attendence and Shearer sticks with us then this club will stablise and Nufc will get through this and we will become a strong club, once again. Just keep looking forward people and believe.

    Long live the legend
