Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is as "hungry and ambitious" as ever - vowing to make sure he will once again be in contention for Footballer of the Year at the end of next season.
The England midfielder, who turns 29 on Saturday, was honoured at a gala dinner in London on Friday by the Football Writers Association after he topped the poll of journalists ahead of Manchester United duo Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney to win the prestigious accolade.
"There is still a lot to achieve for me personally, for Liverpool and England, so hopefully next year is going to be a lot bigger for me trophy wise," Gerrard said.
Although Liverpool were unable to sustain their title drive, Gerrard pledged to continuing working towards making the Anfield club the best around once more.
He scored 24 goals, 16 of which came in the Barclays Premier League as he led the Reds' challenge to eventual champions United.
"The coaches at Liverpool and England are always driving me on, trying to improve me as a player. I am 29 on Saturday and I still feel I can get better," he said.
"I am still learning every single day in training, working on parts of my game, am still very hungry and ambitious."
Gerrard added: "The night has blown me away to be honest, I did not realise it was such a big event with so many people here.
"I would love nothing better than to come back here and share this evening with you again, so I will certainly try my best to be here next year."

All you manchester utd fans yes you had a great season and i congratulate you, but you go on and on about being the best in the world, thats ok in short doses but why do you have to go on and on. why dont you just let your team do the talking on the pitch? you need to learn some sportsmanship. Alex ferguson is a great manager and you are lucky to have him but if you took him away from the team as well then you would not be where you are today, i believe rafa is also a great manager and soon he will deliver for liverpool so you should watch out because the bigger you are the harder you will fall

The difference is passion. Liverpool has outplayed Man U in this factor on many occasions. I'll take one for instance, UCL finals. It only took one goal to drive Man U flat on the recent UCL final. Compare that with the final liverpool had with AC milan. Down 3 and still came back to win it. Same scenario with the 2 league games man u had with liverpool. Plus liverpool have done the 3-0 win againts barca before. And the game that was actually UCL standards is the game between liverpool and chelsea. Its really simple, you're playing with a team that loves possession, edge them on that and you're dominant. Chelsea did that. Liverpool did that. What did man u do? Stay back and make ferdinand sweat. You got players like c.ronaldho, rooney, gigs, tevez and the poor manager just couldn't see it. Come on now!
