Birmingham have announced Dutch winger Daniel de Ridder has left the club, which could pave the way for a move to Wigan.The 24-year-old exits St Andrews after just one season, with his contract cancelled by mutual consent.

The former Ajax youngster was signed on a free transfer from Spanish side Celta Vigo a year ago on a three-year deal but found opportunities scarce due to both form and fitness.

His release could alert the likes of Wigan boss Steve Bruce, who has been linked with a move for the versatile player. Bruce signed De Ridder for Birmingham last summer, before moving on to Wigan in November.

De Ridder started eight games for City during the course of the season, plus four as a substitute, but despite showing glimpses of his talent was largely inconsistent.
