Former Italy and Chelsea midfielder Roberto di Matteo has reportedly been lined up for the vacant manager's post at MK Dons. The Dons are reported to see Di Matteo as the perfect replacement for Paul Ince, who took over from Mark Hughes at Blackburn last week.
Di Matteo, who played for Chelsea and Lazio and won 34 caps for Italy, retired from football in 2002 through injury.
However, the 38-year-old still retains strong links with England and is believed to be keen to step into management and sees the ambitious newly-promoted League One club as the perfect challenge.
With sides now returning to pre-season training, the Dons are believed to be keen to make a quick appointment.
Di Matteo has been taking his coaching badges with Spurs assistant Gus Poyet, but MK Dons chairman Peter Winkelman claims he has received 40 applications to replace Ince.
The likes of Ian Holloway, Nigel Adkins, Steve Cotterill and Peter Reid have all been linked with the Dons.

Dons need a proven manager ince was top man last season and i would of loved him to take the dons further, but a big job like Blackburn he had to take it, If Peter Reid is up for the job then he could take dons much further just need some strikers and hold on to the good players we have
I don't think we should go for Mike Newell. Steeped in controversy and not the best manager mentioned in the list in my opinion.
I think we should appoint a fellow Scot in Paul Lambert. Done a great job down the road at Wycombe last season and his teams play some excellent football.
justin he scored the fastest goal in fa cup historyas for running a club who knows but like everyone you got to start some where even paul ince had to start some where but this guy never even been an assitant coach so it like given the job to a real amature anyway good luck to him and the dons
this is MK Dons for chrissakes, it's not like the second choice is alex ferguson ~ give the guy a chance.
not proven at all........................we should go for Mike Newell proven at this level and Pete Winkleman must be the straightest chairman in the league!
Well you have been sleeping then Justin. Was a good player and I think I am right in saying scored winning goal in Cup Final from Chelsea in about the 1st minute.
Not sure of management credentials though, bit of a chance. Might bring in some decent Italian players though
I've never heard of the guy before in my life.
