Xavi named player of Euro 2008

VIENNA (AFP) - Spanish midfielder Xavi was named player of Euro 2008 by UEFA on Monday.

The 28-year-old Barcelona dynamo - scorer of eight goals in 63 internationals - was judged to be at the heart of Spain's triumphant campaign which saw them top it with a 1-0 victory over Germany in Sunday's final ending a 44 year title drought.

"It was him (Xavi) who gave the team its tempo," said UEFA technical director Andy Roxburgh.

Xavi scored once in the tournament and also created the goal for Fernando Torres in the final.

  5. UEFA should thought twice before unfairly selecting this xavi.i totally disagree with the vote! Xavi got dissapointed in three critical games though he scored against russia with the simplest chance!a true top player is iniesta because of his tireless performance and most moves were rotating around him!!! then comes the chief conductor-fabrigas.this lad had a big influence in terms of coordinating plays from midfield and strikers, the thing xavi failed throughout difficult matches! it is unfortunate his(fabrigas) teammates seem to underrate the london based wize kid'maybe a master is only respected greatly in foreign land'!offcourse, fabrigas had a bad game in the final so did xavi!!!Senna's workrate put him on third!oh this humble man was the spine of the team.he worked tirelessly to protect both ramos and the declining puyol while involving in some attacks-well done humble man!!!it's sad that the more fancied players like Nasri, Modrig, Benzema and even ronaldo did neither involve much nor go further!anyways, nice tournenment!   6. Xavi played a mean game did'nt give Cesc Fabregas chance for any free kicks or corner. I think they have fight between them or may be Xavi was bit selfish played to win the player of the tournament.
    I hope he soon retires from international football.
