Sir Alex Ferguson expects the end of Euro 2008 to herald a busy spell in the transfer market but insists Manchester United will not be rushing to spend.
The United manager has targets, but after a season in which his team won the Barclays Premier League and Champions League he is confident in the quality they already possess and could settle on just one new arrival.
Ferguson said: "The European Championship derails transfer activity. Nothing really happens when the championships are on.
"Obviously, now that is all over, people settle down.
"Managers are back at their clubs and you can get some dialogue now if they are interested, but I wouldn't think (we would buy) any more than one player.
"We are looking at one or two things."
Ferguson will continue to monitor movement in the market but does not see many transfer dealings being straightforward.
He said: "People think it's easy to buy players nowadays, but it's not because money plays a big part first of all.
"Clubs with ambitions don't want to sell their best players, so it's not as easy as you'd think and we tend to look for younger ones."
Ferguson was speaking at the Great Scots Cup charity golf event, held at the Carrick course by Loch Lomond where he is the honorary captain.
Proceeds from the event were to be donated to Ferguson's charity, Elizabeth Hardy Ferguson Trust Fund, and the Children's Hospice Association Scotland.

CARRICK IS A WASTE OF SPACE ANDY H? NOT FROM WHAT IVE SEEN PAL!
berbatov is a handy striker and youre right we need to replace saha...as far as a replacemenr for van der sar i also think that we should focus on ben foster as he has massive potential as does young anderson as a replacement for paul scholes.our defence and midfield are strong i just think that we should go for a striker that is good in the air etc...i just wish teddy sheringham was 15 years younger as he was one of the most intelligent footballers ive ever seen. UTD TIL WE DIE!!!
I dont know why every1 keeps sayin' sell ronaldo? Real Madrid even said themselves they would never pay 100million for any player n why spend it on ronaldo when there's players like messi, kaka even ronaldinho that u could get for about 20mil now! Them players would walk ronaldo off the park if the wanted 2! n thats no disrepect to ronaldo he's an amazin' talent but he's no zidane(worth every penny of the transfer record paid 4 him) n united have a tall striker already one that will score headers, amazin goals and tap in's n thats manucho theres no point in wastin all that money on a striker when the clubs in debt! n van der sar had a great tournament but i think its time 2 try foster out once he fully recovers from his knee operation! cause we need a young core if united want 2 dominate europe for the next 5 years!
Graham, Dublin.
i cant see how man u can feel like champions. if you take away the 15 to 20 points they get from refs. by diving or ferguson intimadating the refs there just above a mid table side. look at the goal spurs scored two or 3 seasons ago the ball was in the back of the net ref says he did not see it
Personally, I think Edwin VDS makes his fair share of howlers and his distribution at times is SHOCKING but he had an outstanding European Championship. He can only have 2 years left really - got to agree in bringing Ben Foster through now.
As for signings - Ronaldo is a fantastic player BUT he isn't the be all and end all. Will United still do well without him - quite probably.
I think we need a replacement for Neville now, to solidify our defence. Evre is excellent and attack minded which really seems to suit Uniteds style of play. The centre backs are excellent and we have good back ups in the that position also. Ramos would be an excellent right back for us - attack minded, good in the air for corners/free kicks, can double as a centre back. Only one way we can get him though and thats if Ronaldo goes to Real.
Other than that - well we need a big but quick striker. Berba - nah, skillful but i just dont see him fitting. We missed out on Torres, he would have been EXCEPTIONAL at United.
Ok guys - so we need a striker so Rooney or Tevez can play off him. Sell Carrick - he is a waste of space right? And who do we get to replace Ronaldo?
Andy
Real would be stupid to trade Robinho, Sneijder and Ramos for Ronaldo.
I would have those 3 anyday rather then ronaldo.
We will never get 100 million POUN for ronaldo, the offer will be likely around 60, also why do we need a keeper?? we have ben foster, arguably the best english keeper around
all the hints by ronaldo of going to RM during the euro2008 shows his lack of respect for mu fans... and alex and CQ this guy only can play against weak opposition. He disappeared during match against germany... that why portual lost.
maybe buy david villa
SAF should sell Ronaldo for 100 pounds if he do not have a heart to play for MU any more .No player is bigger than the club. take the money and xhange w real mardid for Robino and wesley. and the remainder buy berbatov...
start gromming ben foster to replace edward van der sar he needs the experinece especially his goal kicks...
Buy senna who did so well for spain... seems to be better than roy keane.he can partner wesley and replace paul scholes in 2-3 yrs time...
SAF NEEDS TO REPLACE SAHA . A KEEPER SHOULD BE AQUIRED ASAP ASWELL DUE TO THE AGE OF VAN DER SAR. A KEEPER NEEDS TO GET TO KNOW HIS DEFENCE BEFORE THEY CAN JELL. KEEPING THE MIGHTY WINKER WOULD KEEP THE PRESSURE ON THE OTHER 3 IN THE UK ,BUT I FEEL UNITED STILL NEED A TALL STRIKER THAT CAN SCORE THE SIMPLE HEADERS AND TAP-INS . ROONEY AND TEVES ARE BOTH OUTSTANDING BUT YOU FEEL THAT SOMETIMES THEY ARE LACKING IN THE AIR.
GET THE YANKS TO GET THEIR WALLETS OUT SAF AND BRING US A GIANT.
OH YES, AND KEEP THE 40+ A SEASON MIDFIELD BEAST OF WORLD FOOTBALL .
NUFF SAID
fergie is a @#$% in manager!
just keep ronaldo nothing else matters
S.A.F. WHAT IS THERE TO SAY ABOUT HIM THAT AINT BEEN SAID ALREADY. CHELSEA CAN KEEP ALL THEIR MONEY COS UNITED HAVE THE CLASS.THE BEST SIGNING CHELSEA COULD EVER MAKE WOULD BE S.A.F BUT HEY YOU CHELSEA SCUM CAN ONLY DREAM HUH?
SAF is The KING...he knows exactly what he is doing...
LONG LIVE THE KING!
Ferguson also looks towards his youth squad too, after the giggs beckhan scholes and co. this should be his first port of call
