Spain only won by a single goal in the final of Euro 2008, but even the casual observer will know that they totally outplayed Germany.
The simple facts offer a window into the way the game panned out - Spain had four times as many shots on target as Joachim Loew's men, and almost twice as many total efforts on goal.
Even still, this does not tell the whole story.
When you have one man alone up front - as Spain did with goalscorer Fernando Torres - the onus to get shots away is shifted towards midfielders breaking from deep.
The quartet of Xavi, David Silva, Andres Iniesta and Cesc Fabregas like to pass the ball into the back of the net, much like the latter's club Arsenal.
While this makes for great entertainment, it is frustrating for fans and no doubt outgoing coach Luis Aragones.
Granted, Germany had more of the overall possession - but that was always going to be the way once the counter-attacking Spaniards went a goal up just after the half hour.
Furthermore, when they did have the ball Germany were lumbering and unimaginative.
They were unable to get enough of it to Bastian Schweinsteiger and they always looked hesitant at the back, with Per Mertesacker particularly out of his depth.
Indeed, you felt that Spain would be able to score with every attack, while Germany rarely threatened a confident Iker Casillas, who has even looked good on crosses in this competition.
That they didn't score a hatful is testament both to Jens Lehmann's good display in the Germany goal - and Spain's own desire to be pleasing on the eye above efficient in front of goal.

in front of germany
the game of spain was best
i really agree on the win of spain
i appriciate the win of spain is totally fixed before the match
the team was really just my dream team
deviant-info - for your information you can also drink the water in Spain.
I totally agree that Germany was outplayed by Spain. I believe that Germany wouldn't have been able to score even if that match was played for 24hours. Spain was a beauty to watch. My sympathy goes to Ballack though he's worked really hard in the last couple of years but have got no laurels both at club and country to show for it. Truth is I do not see him be crowed anything in the nearest future and time is really running out. Congrate Spain.
I knew that SPAIN will win the euro cup 2008 after they beat Italy in the quarter final. Let's face it, Germany did play horrible and it was painful to watch. I am so embarrassed for Germany since they used to be my favorite team some years ago. But anyway, they need to make some major adjustment in the team if they want to win any big title in the coming up years.
"Not always the best but then neither was Spain, especially against Italy."
Seriously? Were we watching the same match? Because as far as I remember Espana deserved that win. The Italians were lumbering and flopping left right and center and were just plain embarassing to watch. In fact, Spain outplayed every team they were pitted against this year. Me thinks Italy and Germany need to change their style. They are sticking to the same routine they used back in 2006 (Germany, especially, needs to stop depending on set pieces since alarmingly few such goals were earned this year) and the sport of futball seems to have evolved. When Germany beat explosive Turkey and advanced, I just knew Spain was going to win the cup.
david s...you are right in saying that the Germans were hopelessly outclassed last night but let's face it - as always they managed to reach the final stages....and on this occasion despite the handicap of a defence made of Lego. so i think it is fair to assume that they will be there or thereabouts again - Schweinsteiger, Frings, Lahm, Podolski...all excellent players all in their prime. The Bundesliga is now bum league either - look at the Werder Bremen, Borussia Dortmund, Shalke and Bayern Munich teams...all have excellent young players.
never write off the germans...
'by the bookies, not by the people'.
what the hell do you think a 'favourite' is, you imbecile? when you are gambling on a result, do you take a straw poll of your mates opinions and calculate the odds that way. bloody idiot.
oooh, viva las vegas. the germans were rubbish. the spanish were ok. but let's face it, who is the more consistent team?
at least you can drink the water in Germany!
Komrad really, out played out classed out fought.......... I like you vivid imagination though but somehow you must rebuild aging players like Ballack and Lehman how long can you be a serious threat. Spain DID you big time and exposed your weakness in defence to some pace and of course every international manager will see that and a attack the feeble defence.
I want to congratulate spain on 2 things
1- euro08
2- you manged to angre the GERMANS... which will lead to bad results for any team(specialy spain) but great results for the great GERMANS, we will have our sweet revenge at the 2010 world cup(if spain got lucky and kept up to the GERMAN standards), if not at the 2012 euro. anyway whenever we play again we will KILL spain.

Has Matthew T been watching the same 2008 tournament as us? Germany came out with their same old boring format, their game plan being to wear down the opposition then score on the break.
I think that they would admit that they had a poorer squad than in previous years and they definitely lacked the midfield drive they have been renowned for. Ballack was dreadful in the final, whingeing, moaning, 'referee - he touched me', and he looked to be without ideas. But, one thing for certain, they will be back up there at the next international tournament, they have the passion for success. This is more than we can say for the overpaid, passionless, 'superstars' from England.
Not having to worry about England scraping through and the inevitability of us losing in the quarters, made the tournament far more enjoyable for me. Hiddink for England manager, for me.
pretournament favourites by the bookies yes.. not by the people :)
viva espana x
Cramshawbar...get your facts right, fella. Germany were the bookies favourite going into the tournament. It was only after their piss poor performances against Croatia and Austria that they were exposed as having a defence reminiscent of the Maginot Line and their odds crumbled accordingly.
well, stephen M .. as everyone here has pointed out (the obvious).. even with ballack , lahm and 'pigbreeder' playing well, they would never be close to Spain in this tournament... they were favourites before , during (although Holland seemed to be the final hurdel before the final) and post tournament.... We are just waiting now for the World Cup final :)
x
Yea, Spain won. But so did greece and denmark. Does not prove a thing amid much trumpet blowing.
Spain beat a poor german side by a single goal, They struggled against an average italy side and only progressed by the penalty lottery. I am not convinced by the latter day conquestador pretty boys.
Roll on the world cup and lets see what they do then!
New force in world football, I think not!!!!!!!
well done spain @#$% y
the crouts german tossers
I'm glad Spain has won. The outcome was obvious even in the Turkey-Germany match that Germany sucked at playing. Congrats to all Spanish people.
Hard luck germanyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.....I hope that you will win it in 2012.. DIE NATIONALMANNSCHAFT ... GO DEUTSCHLANDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
One thing should be noted though...Podolski was clearly on the receiving end of an attempted headbutt from Silva but he just walked away without a fuss. Had it been Klinsmann or Voeller, they would have gone down as if they had been picked off by a sniper.
That said, I think the German fans - and the television viewers - would have happily welcomed the old playacting back with open arms if it meant the quality that Jurgen, Rudi et al brought with it. Lothar Matthaeus must be holding his head in his hands somewhere tonight. Ballack isn't fit to lace Matthaeus' boots.
And Mehmet Scholl a superstar? He was at best a might-have-been just like he was for Bayern Munich. I suspect your affection may be more than a little tainted by his Turkish roots rather than his occasionally deft left foot.
I'll be honest - I wanted Germany to win as I have a connection to the country but christ almighty, anyone who says they played 'expansive flowing football' in this tournament clearly thinks that Holland is still occupied by the Germans.
i expected spain to win but i didn't expect germany to be so @#$% in the game.
To Mathew T: First of all thank you for mentioning Senna. He has been magnificent in midfield and has been my player of the tournament. But hang on!!!! Germany, expansive flowing football???? What game was that?
