Champions League - Chelsea to appeal UEFA bans

Eurosport - Tue, 30 Jun 09:16:00 2009

Chelsea are to appeal the "unnecessarily harsh" punishments handed out by UEFA in the wake of their controversial Champions League semi-final defeat.

FOOTBALL Chelsea striker Didier Drogba hassles referee Tom Ovrebo at the end of the Champions League semi-final exit to Barcelona - 0

European football's governing body banned striker Didier Drogba (pictured right) and right-back Jose Bosingwa for four and three matches, respectively, with other games suspended.

The punishment was meted out for their comments in the wake of the 1-1 second-leg draw with Barcelona at Stamford Bridge in May which sent them out of the competition.

Drogba's foul-mouthed rant at the official was captured by watching millions on live TV.

The Ivorian stunned the worldwide audience by shouting "It's a f****** disgrace" straight at the cameras. He later apologised for his behaviour.

Bosingwa was banned for labelling Tom Ovrebo (pictured left) a "thief" in an interview - words he later retracted.

But he too will miss a large chunk of Chelsea's Champions League group stage unless the club can get the suspensions reduced on appeal.

The club also received a fine of £85,000 for the improper conduct of their players and for the throwing of missiles by their supporters.

  4. Its funny how people bring up the "respect" programme, when respect is suppose to be a two way deal. It ddin't look like ol' Tommy respected Chelsea at all. And neither does Platini. And further more isn't it about time Football had a replay or challenge system like in tennis. It would save alot of heartache and flared tempers.

  7. regardless of who you support this punishment has to stand if only to show that the respect campaign has some teeth to it i am fed up with watching 10 players accosting the ref etc and maybe this sort of punishment needs to be done on a weekly basis rather than just when the cameras are on the ref isn't going to change his mind firstly and the club can mark a ref on his performance after the game only the captain should speak to the ref

  9. It is a disgrace that Chelsea are even appealing against this ban which in my opinion was too tame! Drogba and/or Chelsea should have been excluded from the competition for 12 months. UEFA should have thrown the book at them! 4 penalty appeals? Only 1 was worth a second look and Drogba's reputation saw to that. Hiddink should never have defended his players actions after that game. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. Chelsea had so many chances to put the game to bed and failed miserably which led to their antics at full time. They are a bunch of over payed, cheating scumbag, bad losers who badly need to grow up. Look what happened in the 1/4 finals against Liverpool. They were robbed of their place in the semi finals by Drogba's inability to stay on his feet, but they accepted their fate and walked on with their heads held high, they just accepted it! Drogba should think long and hard about how he wants to be remembered in this game because he doesn't have very long left. An ageing striker hated worldwide even by his own fans!

  10. To Jyde, Re your comment to No72.
I think you infer (incorrectly) that there are racist overtones to the word ape, as directed to Drogba and Bosingwa. I suspect you would have no problem using it to label Wayne Rooney.

You see to me, and many other normals, Ape is used to describe an ill-educated overpaid spoilt thug.

Try as much as you might to hide behind your racist finger pointing, thats exactly what Drogba and Co actually are.

  11. I think marfrid needs to go back to school looking at his spelling !!! How he can justify the chelsea players behaviour is beyond me,yes we all agree that the ref had a nightmare. You probably won't see him again in such a high profile match that's his punishment. Take it on the chin accept your players/club made mistakes.

THIS MEANS THAT CHELSKI THINK THAT DROGBA IS STAYING(DAMN AND BLAST)
OR ELSE THEY WOULDNT WASTE THEIR TIME
AS FOR YOU CHELSKI FANS NO MATTER HOW MUCH YOU CRY ,SWEAR,STAMP YOUR FEET, SCREAM AND SHOUT YOU WILL NEVER CHANGE THE RESULT
YOUR AN EMBARRASMENT, EVERY TIME BARCALONA BEAT YOU WE HAVE TO GO THROUGH THE REF CHEATED US TANTRUM
    I REMEMBER LAST TIME
MOURINHO CLAIMING THE REF WENT INTO BARCALONAS DRESSING ROOM AT HALF TIME
FRISK GOT DEATH THREATS FOR THAT, THEN MOURINHO ADMITS HE MADE IT ALL UP
AND I DIDNT SEE ONE PERSON SAY SORRY LOL
IF YOU DONT FEEL THE PAIN OF DEFEAT YOU WILL NEVER REALLY APPRECIATE THE PLEASURE OF VICTORY
    NOW GET OVER IT

  16. How on earth do Chelsea think they have room to appeal? Millions of people saw Drogba lose it with the ref. Yes everyone knows that the ref made mistakes but that does not mean that a professional sportsman should act in that way. I hope that the punishment is increased so it will show other teams that they have to show respect and not act like prima donas and then not receive any punishment.

  17. There is no justification for the players use of language after the match butas a highly competitive sportsman myself I can fully understand the frustrations of the players haven given their all for 180 minutes in a high profile match. The referee was an utter disgrace and I can not believe there have been no sanctions on him, nor any apology on his appointmnent from the powers that be. The Chelsea players should be applauded the the passion tey showed having lost the match - in a world where they are constantly accussed of just turning up for the money I felt it refreshing to see how much they cared for the result and they behaved on the whole very professionally during the match. Yes I am a Chelsea fan and feel that Chelsea have been unfairly villified by everyone since the take over by Mr Abraovich - lay off

  19. Mild punishment would have been better. You dont cut off the head simply because you have headache. Though Drogba and Bosingwa's attitude were wrong, though prompted by a negative action, but the ruling on Chelsea and its players is FAR TOO HARSH. And for the umpteenth time, why is UEFA not talking about Ovrebo, the centre referee?

From koonlay, on Tue 30 Jun 8:26AM
  20. I hope they increase the bans and fine as a result of Chelseas arrogance - they got off lightly and are not exempt from the rules. So the ref got it wrong, but its all about how you deal with it on the night, and the Chelsea players didnt deal with it. They had plenty of chances to win the game, but bottled it. It happens.
