Champions League - Chelsea to appeal UEFA bans

Eurosport - Tue, 30 Jun 09:16:00 2009

Chelsea are to appeal the "unnecessarily harsh" punishments handed out by UEFA in the wake of their controversial Champions League semi-final defeat.

FOOTBALL Chelsea striker Didier Drogba hassles referee Tom Ovrebo at the end of the Champions League semi-final exit to Barcelona - 0

European football's governing body banned striker Didier Drogba (pictured right) and right-back Jose Bosingwa for four and three matches, respectively, with other games suspended.

The punishment was meted out for their comments in the wake of the 1-1 second-leg draw with Barcelona at Stamford Bridge in May which sent them out of the competition.

Drogba's foul-mouthed rant at the official was captured by watching millions on live TV.

The Ivorian stunned the worldwide audience by shouting "It's a f****** disgrace" straight at the cameras. He later apologised for his behaviour.

Bosingwa was banned for labelling Tom Ovrebo (pictured left) a "thief" in an interview - words he later retracted.

But he too will miss a large chunk of Chelsea's Champions League group stage unless the club can get the suspensions reduced on appeal.

The club also received a fine of £85,000 for the improper conduct of their players and for the throwing of missiles by their supporters.

  1. Unbelievable ARROGANCE from CFC. The Ref was poor as we all know, but the behavior of their players was truly childish and the bans are pathetically lenient and the fine a total joke, and why wasn't Ballack in the dock too?
Reading the Chelsea fans' comments sums up what a sad state football has become. I've been more inclined to watch the egg-chasers in recent times, but now it appears that some countries think thuggery is ok, so maybe not. Is there anyone out there who wants to compete in a "sport"?

people should be very cautious with what they write or say about others and i dont think for any reason, Drogba should be desribed as APE .....this is just a matter of football or you`ve got other scores to settle with Drogba. what will be your reaction if i likened you to a PIG....grow up man

It was justice that prevailed, Chelsea under Guus bored world football with 180 minutes defending. They started defending before even stepping on to the Nuo Camp. With all respect, Guus Hiddink is a good manager/coach but he is used to coaching little teams hence all the defending and even lock out. The chances they had were all because the other team was trying to perforate a bunch of people kicking the ball out. Chelsea never constructed one single attack. The Essien goal was a wonderfully struck shot but even there it was lucky how the ball ended on his path in the first place. How many goals did essien score like that? You can expect it from Lampard but not from Essien who in my opinion is the best defending midfielder. Chelsea didn't any penalties to go through, they just needed someone to finish off Barca at that stage. In saying all this I have to say that for the good of football, Barca gone through with a fantastic strike from Iniesta.

  4. i wait to see the outcome of this appeal if the dissission is changed at all would be a travisty football today is a game of three parts football and the antics of some of the players getting players sent off and a wink or nod to the bench of the harrasing of the officials including foul language. the culture in football now includes attacking the officials for every dissission right or wrong it would be a radiacal move to book any player who questioned a referee or showed desent, but we all know if that was implemented you would have less than 5 players on the field before half time. IT's a better man than me "Gunggerdin" who has the answers to the playing just footbaal for 90 minutes.

  5. Harsh? He was lucky his punishment didn`t get worse! I do agree that the referee did wrong decisions but still your not meant to fight him/Take the micky. He should have had a bigger ban for what he did.

  6. This is idiocy of the highest order, this Ovrebo guy has been let to go lose after officiating a match like a 14 year old teenage girl. This Ovrebo is the man to be BANNED, not drogba. OVREBO should be banned from officiating any matches for the next 6 months, and during that period he should go back to refereeing school or wherever they teach them how to officiate.

Secondly, can people stop this nonsense, that drogbas comments were a bad example to children worldwide! Thats bull.s.h.*t! What of Ovrebos judgments? What do they teach those kids? That its good to be unfair? Fifa and Michelle Platini should wake up and smell themselves before pointing fingers at players.

  7. In the end, Chelsea only have themselves to blame for losing that game. Despite the missed calls from the ref, the fact is they had the lead with a man advantage. Guus Hiddnik made a tactial mistake (a common one at) for dropping back in the last 25 mins which allowed Barca space and the opportunity to score. If they had kept attacking, Chelsea would have won that game, no doubt.

  9. The bans are rightly deserved. There is absolutely no excuse for the behavior of Chelsea players after that game, no matter how controversial the ref was or how important the game was, absolutely no excuse. Drogba's behavior in particular was disgraceful. They are a professionals and should act like a professionals, win or lose. Actually, the only Chelsea player who demonstrated true class and professionalism after that game was Frank Lampard. BTW, there was no UEFA controversy against Chelsea. Yes, the ref didn't award the so called penalities, but he also gave Barca an undeserved red card when Chelsea had the lead. Don't see how that's biased.

  10. Kim Whittaker-what about the Arsenal players the previous season when denied a stone bonk penalty at Ashburton Grove and then a dodgy one given against at Anfield in quarter finals against Liverpool-did they chase the ref about and swear at the tv cameras like demented little children? No.
    Who's the saddo now dear?
All players should take a leaf out of the British Lions rugby team though-they accepted those bad decisions against them with hardly a whimper.

  12. JIMMYRICE, wud u cop on to urself. "Drogba giving his all", Are u joking me. If the cheating scumbag stayed on his feet he might have scored a chance or 2. Instead he was too busy cheating like he has done since joining the epl. The size of the muppet and he rolling around holding his leg half the game. He should be banned for a season. Wake up prat.

  13. I cannot get over all u rent boys whinging on here still. That ape drogba deserved what he got, bosingwa too, pity that german scum ballack didnt get what he was due. These boys think they can run the game, fair play to uefa for standing up to them. Im fed up of these stupid comments such as kim whittaker ' the ref was advised by uefa to rob chelsea '. Why dont u lot death threat this ref too and run him out of football. BITTER BITTER SORE LOSER SCUM!!!!!!!!

  14. It is time for FIFA to bring in technology and with it respect for the referees.
    1. There should TV cameras available for instant review for penalty area infractions.
    2. Only the Team captain has the right to challenge (three) a referees call and invoke the instant replay.
    3. Any kind of dissent shown by players should result in a Yellow card
    4. Any foul language used by players rat stage of the game results in a Red card

    From starman_123, on Tue 30 Jun 1:55AM
  15. I'm not a Chelsea fan, but I must say without a doubt that Chelsea did get the wrong end of the stick, and the refereeing was blatantly biased. Come on ManUre, Liverpuke and arse-anal fans admit that if your team was the the target of biased calls you would not be crying foul and defending the actions of your players? And what about your Managers who are never short on words after a game? If UEFA had any marbles they would look into root of this problem and have to wonder why would the Captains of two prominent national teams (Ballack and Terry) would chase after the referee and give them a mouthful. Having said all that Drogba and Bosingwa were wrong in what they did. The Chelsea players wrong in their actions after the game: Two wrongs do not make a right. Chelsea/Hiddink should have taken a page from SAF, Wenger, Benitez, Mourinhos book and called out the UEFA on the biased refereeing. It is time to get technology involved into this "business".

  16. This week's controvesy has been about Burger and his gouging and the rights and wrongs of his punishment .. in some ways he (IMHO) has brought Rugby Union into disrepute .. however, I am so pleased that I follow the oval ball code when I remember how the Boks reacted to the yellow card after 30 secs and how the Lions didn't pester the ref to send him off (red card) - when you see the likes of Drogba, Ballack etc. who earn more than the entire Lions team put together acting like spoilt kids - you suddenly realise that perhaps there is more to sport than the money and the glory ...

On a related note - so sad to see de villiers actually attempting to condone the action with his - if ya wanna dance bye a tutu comment - now if anything brings a game into disrepute then it will be purile and assinine comments such as that ..

  18. "unnecessarily harsh"
    ,,
It was "unnecessarily harsh" For Ballack to always chase the ref and man handle him.
    ,,
"unnecessarily harsh" For Drogba's disgrace mouthful
    ,,
"unnecessarily harsh" For nearly the whole team to surround the ref and have him to be escorted off the pitch.
    ,,
"unnecessarily harsh" For the fans to throw missiles at the ref.
    ,,
Be a team Chelsea, one that kids van be proud of, not one like the old days of the firms.
