Champions League - Chelsea to appeal UEFA bans

Eurosport - Tue, 30 Jun 09:16:00 2009

Chelsea are to appeal the "unnecessarily harsh" punishments handed out by UEFA in the wake of their controversial Champions League semi-final defeat.

FOOTBALL Chelsea striker Didier Drogba hassles referee Tom Ovrebo at the end of the Champions League semi-final exit to Barcelona - 0

European football's governing body banned striker Didier Drogba (pictured right) and right-back Jose Bosingwa for four and three matches, respectively, with other games suspended.

The punishment was meted out for their comments in the wake of the 1-1 second-leg draw with Barcelona at Stamford Bridge in May which sent them out of the competition.

Drogba's foul-mouthed rant at the official was captured by watching millions on live TV.

The Ivorian stunned the worldwide audience by shouting "It's a f****** disgrace" straight at the cameras. He later apologised for his behaviour.

Bosingwa was banned for labelling Tom Ovrebo (pictured left) a "thief" in an interview - words he later retracted.

But he too will miss a large chunk of Chelsea's Champions League group stage unless the club can get the suspensions reduced on appeal.

The club also received a fine of £85,000 for the improper conduct of their players and for the throwing of missiles by their supporters.

  1. I think it's time that football clubs and players finally grew up. There were many things wrong on the night and it was a manifestation of Chelsea's problems throughout the season. No one player is bigger than the game we all love except for the players tonwhom it is a job and for many a meal ticket. Unfortunately they do not all love the game as much as us fans and do not understand the rules. I would like to say that Chelsea deserved all 4 penalties but I am not a liar. The media and especially the papers do not help the situation. They only want to sell newspapers. It happens time and again. They will enlarge any minor discrepancy.
Firstly, only one of the 4 'claims' for a penalty was remotely near to being a penalty. The rule is hand to ball not ball to hand. The referee called both claims correctly. No penalty! Drogba's claim maybe should have been a penalty but if a referee sees throughout the game that he is falling down feigning injury he finally realises that this player is trying to make him look like a fool and of course he won't be made to look like fool. Drogba is a cheat and needs to look at himself and decide what he wants to be remembered for in the game. A cheat or a brilliant forward. Right now all fans HATE him and know him as a cheat. Change now Drogba or leave English football we don't need you here. You teach our children how to cheat not how to play football. Look at Ian Rush. Gary Lineker... NOT Alan Shearer. The last outside the box.
Secondly, John Terry - shut up please. You are the biggest cheat - what you did to Ledley King in the Spurs match was unbelievable and deserved a further ban for your racial comments - and you being Captain of England is shocking. You cannot say Drogba realised about kids watching the next day - you KNOW they watch all games and read papers. He should not have been on the field of play at the end and should NOT be talking to anyone let alone the

  2. I can only assume most of the people on this board don't have or show any emotions. I don't condone the behaviour of Drogba and Ballack, but given the circumstances I certainly don't blame them. They are paying the price for Platini and co instructing the ref to under no circumstance let Chelsea get to the final. Call me paranoid but they don't exactly try to hide their utter disdain towards English football.

  4. The ban wasnt harsh. Drogba fully deserved his ban for being an arrogant sulking petulant diving annoying slefish @#$%. Ban the whole chelsea team for even trying to appeal. AS you can probably tell i dont like chelsea.

  5. Kim. forget about the individuals in this case. Chelsea as a Club feel that their players have been wronged and are prepared to risk further punishment for themselves and their players by appealing against the decisions of the EUFA committee. This will be interpreted as bringing the game into disrepute and will further alienate them from the rest of the football world. Maybe Roman and Kenyon want to heighten the feeling of persecution to develop team spirit. More like a lepar colony.

  6. "unnecessarily harsh" punishments? Really? Not harsh enough in my view. I would like to see FIFA go one stage further and insist that referees follow the rules and issue instant yellow cards for dissent and not retreating 10 yards at free kicks. There would be numerous red cards before the players finally got the message that football is a sport which has rules by which they must abide. Whilst I agree that referees do make awful mistakes and are inconsistent in their handling of matches, how many referees has anyone seen go up to a player who has just missed an opportunity to score and get in his face about it? Or shout and ridicule a player who misplaces a pass? None. Why? Because the referees get paid to referee. Footballers get paid to play football not referee. So, footballers should leave the reffing of matches to the appointed officials and keep their gobs shut..

  7. Comment hidden due to its low rating. Show

It is easy to criticize others when they are faced with misfortune; I pray all of you would be willing to hold yourself when you see glaring injustice towards to make other people to get advantage. Ask Nigerians what the meaning of quota system is and you would appreciate injustice. Drogba and co are just humans; FIFA always preach fairness to all. Let the referee be punished to deter others, the rules are meant to be fully followed for orderliness.

  8. Whatta bunch od saddo's. all having a pop at Chelsea, when if it ws their team thywould be moaning from teh rooftops about the ref cheating them out of the game.

And how on earth can anybody say that Barcelona were the better team over th etwo legs, when in the first leg they hardly had a shot on target and in the 2nd th eonly shot on target they had in teh entire game was their injury time equaliser.

Not only should Chelsea have won easily (even without the "penalties") but if it hadn't been for a clearly corrupt referee then Chelsea would have walked the two legs.

Some of you may have a go at Drogba, Ballack et al, but try looking at yourselves when decisons like those not given to Chelsea, are not given to your team.

Most of you will have thrown "a wobbly" at some stage, and it's likely that many of you will have hurled abuse at the referee too

Regardless of whether or not pofessonal players should set behavioural examples, they are human beings like you and me, and will emotionally react at times when disgraceful decsions are given against them.

The botton line is that Referee deliberately cheated Chelsea out of a result. Allegedly under UEFa advise to do so too.

If they punish Chelsea in any way then they should also ban that referee for life.

  9. Hope EUFA punish em properly now by doubling the bans and suspending the whinging kraut @#$%.

  14. Drogba, Ballack and the "Helmet" are all a bit of low lives. Zidane was truly the worst a real LOW LIFE from the sewers of Marseilles he could ave killed Materazzi the "BOZO". Mons. Zidane had a reputation for being a bloody hot temper guy, twice previously was kicked out out of international matches. The Italian low life did provoke the Arab but to go that far and try hurt the BOZO seriously was WRONG. ZIZOU could have gone to prison for a very long time if the BOZO was seriously hurt. Thus Messrs. Drogba, Ballack and the "Helmet" should all have pay the price..

  15. Yet a few years ago a Serbian player got a 2 match ban for racially abusing Patrick Vieira smh at UEFA. What Drogba did deserved not more than a 3 match ban and Bosingwa a slap on the wrist. And what are they doing about the ref's apalling performance. It's one thing to make mistakes and quite another to take the piss.

  16. Chelsea, show some dignity and respect for the bigger picture; take your punishment as if you are part of the football community and get on with the game. You can't buy your way out of this one. How was Ballack's indiscretion ignored?

  17. right listen up first the whole team should be banned for lets say the first game and dogba for the duration there must be a message sent out that will not be tolerated and why do chelsea appeal so much the whole episode wss shown live across the football world talk about a smoking gun so what is the appeal for do they think their money will talk i hope or the game will lose any credence it has and when they lose the appeal they should double the ban AND a hefty fine not a petty amount

  19. Typical Chelsea. Drogba should have been banned for life, he's a disgrace! Don't care if the ref was incompetent, you don't behave like that and especially not on camera. Whata great role model Drogba is for young lads watching this display of petulance and naked aggression. Hope they double the ban and fine Chelsea £25million for challenging what everyone outside of Chelseas thinks was a lenient response.
