La Liga - Barca wait for Eto'o decision

Barcelona have confirmed they offered Samuel Eto'o a two-year contract extension before the Cameroon striker's agent criticised them over their handling of the affair.

"Barcelona are waiting for a reply from Eto'o on an offer of an extension for two years on the same salary level as before," the European champions said on their website.

Eto'o has a contract until 2010 and if he accepts would be tied until 2012.

Earlier, Eto'o's agent Jose Maria Mesalles said he had received the contract offer from Barca late on Monday after previously having been told coach Pep Guardiola did not want to keep the player.

"The player wants to stay and complete the last year of his contract," Mesalles said.

"If Barca don't want him they should say so, so we can pursue the player's future in a professional manner.

"The club said coach Pep Guardiola did not want him. Guardiola has not told the player he is not required."

He accused Barca of leaking stories to the media that cast Eto'o in a bad light and said that if the club had reached an agreement with Manchester City to sell him, Eto'o would be happy to negotiate.

"We haven't spoken to City but if Barca have reached an agreement it shouldn't be that difficult to reach a deal," Mesalles added.

Speculation over Eto'o's future escalated over the weekend when Barca president Joan Laporta said in a radio interview that Eto'o had received a 'stratospheric offer' from another club that would make him the best-paid player in the world.

Media have reported that Manchester City are offering Eto'o a five-year contract, and Barca a transfer fee of 25 million euros plus variables.

Eto'o was Barca's top scorer with 30 league goals last season as they won La Liga, the Copa Del Rey and the Champions League.

  1. I think Etoo will leave Barca as he has just won­ everything he culd have won there and seeks a new­ challenge. Also if ppl think man city will challenge­ for any major honours in the near future are very dumb­ as a team of stars does not necceraily make a­ championshp winning team. I­ think Etoo should go to Man City-this is a club that­ would suit him, consists of players who prefer money to­ sporting ambitions! I hope Eto'o stays and extends his contract, but if­ he wants to blackmail Barca and stay and leave for­ free, well, I hope he does, so he could rot in the­ reserve squad and ruin his career, so when he is a free­ agent, not even mallorca would want him. Remember last­ season, Eto'o did not do so go, and no team wanted­ him, they did not want to gamble, but now that he­ scored 30 goals, with the help of Henry, Messi, Xavi,­ Iniesta and the rest, now man city wants him, because­ they have money to spend. Let me ask you something, why­ arn't any other club making offers for Eto'o,­ because he is asking too much, and they are not going­ to pay him that much. So I hope he stays and Barcelona­ rots him, let him play with the reserve squad, give him­ the double training, and when he leaves for free, no­ team would want him then.

  19. If Eto'o is greedy then he deserves to be so. He­ has worked up a reputation to earn higher. He is­ approaching senior years. He has been working hard all­ his life. And now it is time to relish and live on what­ you have achieved. Some say Iniesta earn less, then he­ has not achieved that much as Eto'o has. When­ Andres reach his 30 he may demand high wages.
