Barcelona have confirmed they offered Samuel Eto'o a two-year contract extension before the Cameroon striker's agent criticised them over their handling of the affair.
"Barcelona are waiting for a reply from Eto'o on an offer of an extension for two years on the same salary level as before," the European champions said on their website.
Eto'o has a contract until 2010 and if he accepts would be tied until 2012.
Earlier, Eto'o's agent Jose Maria Mesalles said he had received the contract offer from Barca late on Monday after previously having been told coach Pep Guardiola did not want to keep the player.
"The player wants to stay and complete the last year of his contract," Mesalles said.
"If Barca don't want him they should say so, so we can pursue the player's future in a professional manner.
"The club said coach Pep Guardiola did not want him. Guardiola has not told the player he is not required."
He accused Barca of leaking stories to the media that cast Eto'o in a bad light and said that if the club had reached an agreement with Manchester City to sell him, Eto'o would be happy to negotiate.
"We haven't spoken to City but if Barca have reached an agreement it shouldn't be that difficult to reach a deal," Mesalles added.
Speculation over Eto'o's future escalated over the weekend when Barca president Joan Laporta said in a radio interview that Eto'o had received a 'stratospheric offer' from another club that would make him the best-paid player in the world.
Media have reported that Manchester City are offering Eto'o a five-year contract, and Barca a transfer fee of 25 million euros plus variables.
Eto'o was Barca's top scorer with 30 league goals last season as they won La Liga, the Copa Del Rey and the Champions League.

Eto'o come to a PROPER league! Leave La Liga, join THE Premiership.
what on the world this spanish racist are saying
enough!
the whole world has know your fact.
Go Etoo Go!!!
If media is to be believed, Barcelona are going to get Villa for Samuel. What's the point of getting Villa? Samuel is as good as Villa, if not better. Both are of the same age. Samuel has an edge over David Villa. He is well established Barca striker with record of about 30 goals or thereabouts each season. If memory serves me right, Samuel has been one of the highest scorers or bombarders in LaLiga for over 5-6 years. It's a immaculate, superb, sublime, perfect, flawless, infallible, spotless, awesome record. Whereas Villa has emerged in the limelight only recently. Do stick with Samuel!
How can barca treat Eto'o like that. If no body likes him I do. Barca did the same thing to Ronaldinho in the time of Rijkhard. I'm really disappointed about the way they treat Black players. Toure and others should advise themselves.Napoleon, Accra-Ghana
Or course they are going to sell him. It states in the article above that "the club said coach Pep Guardiola did not want him". So you can understand why he want's to talk to any interested parties. ONLY at the last minute was he offered a 2 year extension, he hasn't accepted it(he might , he might not). So if he does refuse the extension common sense says he must be sold.
Why wait until he is out of contract & can sign for anyone without Barca recieving a penny for him, when they can sell him now & use the money to buy a replacement.
They could even use the money gained by selling him now & test their rivals mettle at the same time by putting in a cheeky bid for Van Nistelroy, who has also been told that he is surplus to requirements at the Bernabau.
Henry, Van Nistelroy & Messi. I would say if anything that's a front 3 that would give them an even better chance of retaining the Champions League & La Liga this season.
It would be bad if rthey sold him he's the best player on the team
According to several daily comics The Sun and The Mirror, Eto'o want's 12.5 million pounds signing on fee from man city a 15 million pound golden handshake from Barcelona...Add that to his 250,000 a week wages if he signs for the Eastlands club and you have a deal...The words grandeur and delusions spring to mind on this one.
" Eto'o was Barca's top scorer with 30 league goals last season as they won La Liga, the Copa Del Rey and the Champions League . " Messi was the overall top scorer for Barça with 38 goals (+24 assists ) in all competitions . Eto'o had a total of 36 goals !!
That's how people can be grateful to you. Barcelona is proving to be very selfish. If i were Eto'o, i would stay this year and walk for free next season. Pep Guardiola is a coward, he can't even dare tell the truth to his own player in his face. This is mostly due to the fact that Guardiola is just a pion of Johan Cruijf, this guy is pulling all the strings in the background, he has always been doing that. Let Guardiola dare say in the media that he doesn't want Eto'o, instead they are showing their greediness on the world wide web
It's two big mistakes to Eto'o and to Barcelona!
If he be move that be end of his career.Too bad!
why the spanish coward are not brave!
say it ya m. f@c.k.en idiots.
u want eto or no?
i don't care about any player but i care too much about racism.
we have trashed u in confederation cup.
u have to respect human as human.
ur retarded players are well respect and get 20 mil dollar every year.

Barca is the worse club i have ever come acros. crafty they are. Mr president how can you renew the contract of a player who scored 36 goals for you without any salary increament. Too bad men. think well before you react dont just try to satisfy only the clubs interset.Guadiola is an ungreatfull coach if not let him come out and say something concerning this Eto saga
Seems total greedy to me if the storys are correct, probably the agents fault though. Stay in spain if this is the way you act, can do without reading about you every day in the paper and what a hard life u live!!!
Big mistake from Barca, if they selling Eto'o! Visca el Barca!!!
