Lions 2009 - De Villiers stands by Burger

Eurosport - Tue, 30 Jun 09:36:00 2009

Springbok coach Peter de Villiers again defended Schalk Burger after the flanker was banned for eye-gouging, saying it had been accidental and that rugby was bound to feature more knocks than ballet.

Peter de Villiers - South Africa - 0

Burger was banned for eight weeks on Sunday for gouging the eyes of British and Irish Lions winger Luke Fitzgerald in the first minute of Saturday's second test in Pretoria. South Africa

South Africa lock Bakkies Botha was banned for two weeks for a dangerous tackle.

"Schalk is an honourable man and if you know his nature and character like I do, then you know he won't ever do something like that," De Villiers (pictured) said.

"He's more physical than any other player in world rugby and he doesn't need to do that sort of thing to show that he's the boss. I have watched the TV footage of the incident and I am still convinced that he did not do anything on purpose."

De Villiers, who said Burger had been shocked when he had seen the replays, pointed out several other physical incidents in the test, which South Africa won 28-25 to build an unassailable 2-0 series lead.

"There were so many incidents in the test - like jumping maliciously into the face of a player with the shoulder - but if we're going to win rugby matches in the boardroom or in front of the cameras then we might as well close shop, go to the nearest ballet shop and buy some nice tutus," he said.

"There are no collisions in ballet but guys who win collisions will always be the players I select."

He added that as a coach he would never encourage eye-gouging, biting, head-butting or spear tackles.

"We have brilliant, world-class players and we have no need to prepare them to do things like eye-gouging that belong in the bushveld (wild)," he said.

The Springbok coach also criticised the Lions for not applauding his team on the series win and denied the world champions had been lucky to win the second test after trailing 18-9 after an hour.

"No one from the Lions has congratulated us yet, but maybe they will after the third Test," he said.

"People say we were lucky but I say lucky is when you walk into a bar and someone tries to hit you but misses. After 80 minutes you look at the scoreboard and you can see that you have more points than the opposition. I think it was more about character than luck."

  5. Why do you all eventually succumb to insulting each other? We all know DeVilliers is brainless and should be muzzled - unfortunately he makes incredibly stupid remarks and the SA Rugby board should be held accountable for allowing it to happen. As a SAfrican, I'm embarrassed that he is our coach, but we have to work with what we've got.
At the end of the day - don't let 1 moron taint the way you think. The Lions tour has been incredible and really good for Rugby overall.

I won't let P DV ruin that for me.

  9. As a Springbok supporter I have to say that I was mortally embarrassed by Burger's actions. His 50th test appearance and 32 seconds into what was an epic game was a despicable and utterly unbecoming act of stupidity (I don't think he has the intelligence to have done it maliciously).
Having said that he shouldn't have been on the field in the first place as he is not the form player for that position, Heinrich Brussouw is, and Burger's absence will force a stronger selection from our erratic politically-appointed and far from adequate coach.
What pains me is the seeming insistence from Lion's supporters that the Lion's were angels on the field and totally bereft of any aggravating play. If the referee had checked the rule book he would have noted that "scrumming up" is illegal and thats the only reason Jones had a prayer against the Beast. Note also, that the Lions bench was intentionally chosen to allow uncontested scrums, a particularly yellow spined approach in the modern game.
BoD should have been cited and although he is a gifted rugby player he is a @#$% who gets preferential treatment from refs because of his whinging wet nappy attitude, one that seems to be all pervasive in the current crop of Lions management. (Bear in mind that one of the players South Africans respect most is Christian Cullen who is also the record try scorer against the boks. Why? Because he is a genius and also a real man. Something BoD is not)
Defeat with grace, yes of course the Springboks have the grace and diplomacy for that. However with the series won and (hopeful) improvements on the starting 15 for the next match the boks will turn on the gas on Saturday.
I would be disappointed with less then 60 points from the Springboks on Saturday - can't wait to see McGeech's face after the game...

I assume you are referring to Mbeki and the ANC's previous policy on HIV? You need to update your facts, friend.
Your point is obtuse, completely irrelevant to any rugby debate, and factually incorrect. Talk rugby, or find another blog.

stevenisle: writes "We have to accept that Rugby Union has a problem in both SA and NZ, in that success in rugby has become integral to their view of themselves as nations". Sorry, but I cannot agree. I will happily concede that South Africans (and Kiwis and Aussies) are hugely passionate about sport, whether it be rugby, cricket, golf, soccer, swimming, tennis, whatever. We just happen to excel at the first three. Perhaps its because of our previous isolation; perhaps because far more South Africans per capita actually play sport than Brits; or because we have such great weather, or because as a nation we have a pioneering spirit. I do not cease to be a proud South African when my team loses (and I certainly don't make excuses for them).
Be very careful when you attribute a broad sweeping statement like yours to a whole nation, bru, especially a nation as diverse as ours. At best it's grossly stereotypic, narrowminded and ignorant. At worst, it's deeply insulting.
If we explore your argument (which I think is: that the success of a national sports team may impact on a nation's identity) further:
I think a far more interesting and well established example is the connection between English football hooliganism and the emergence of the so called English "yob-culture". How long were the English fans banned from attending matches in Europe?
ergo; if I then argue that all Englishmen are yobs, I think you would find that hyperbole

  12. De Villiers is an idiot and doesn't deserve to coach a team of monkeys let alone a professional rugby team. His comments about the Burger situation are simply commensurate of a man who lacks IQ. take nothing away from the BOKS - they simply won and rugby continues but he has taken the shine off the victory with his stupid comments. Standing up for your team is one thing, which any good coach can do with truth and conviction, trying to defend the actions of Burger (who is also a nut case) in such an obvious and blatantly cowardly act is another matter. Shame on you De Villiers, you are no better than Burger, I hope you get sacked you idiot.

De Villiers is a disgrace, and so is his team. This has nothing to do with rugby or sport. It is pure violence and cheating. SA may feel like they have won something, but in the eyes of the rest of the world they are just the same sad, racist, losers they always were.

  15. fact is that you lot are nothing but a bunch of winers. get over it. you lost and thats that. another fact is that you have lost the last 7 test matches and last three test series. you tried hard, but failed, ones again. chances are you will lose the next test and will go home with another whitewash behind your names. say what you like, it will not change the fact that your precious lions have failed again. they played awesome mind you, and deserve to be respected as a team, but they just werent good enough. now stop wining you bunch of babies, dry your nappies and get over it. oh and martin g, you are nothing but a bitter sorry bad loser and i think you should go to bed now because its time for the grown ups to discuss grown up things. BOKKE!!!!!!!!!

  16. We have to accept that Rugby Union has a problem in both SA and NZ, in that success in rugby has become integral to their view of themselves as nations. Consequently there has arisen an atitude that winning is more important than anything else, including fair play, their reputation abroad and the safety of opposing players. for those of us who have watched rugby for years there are numerous examples of foul and dangerous playby both sides over the years. Unfortunately we cannot expect the IRB to do anything about vit until someone is blinded, crippled or dies.

Wow! That's some travelogue! Well balanced, thoughtful, backed up by great sources and interesting factoids. You should really publish this, china.

So one in four men in SA have commited rape, hey- what an amazing fantastical statistic. Thanks also for educating us on the what a cell phone is: I honestly had no idea a mobile phone and cell phone were the same thing. You live and learn!

I particularly appreciate your "expert" comments on safety and security. needles to say, when next I take a break from my busy gang-raping schedule, I will make sure that I don't stray too far beyond my razor wire, especially when I am carrying an unconcealed loaf of bread in my hand.....

  18. A team who've been playing together for years scrapes through at home against a makeshift side with most of its best players out injured, well done to them but hardly a major achievement. De Villiers is being defensive in order to deflect from his team's inadequacies.
As for Shadowcat in post 14, he is the stereotypical South African, a racist bigot with a chip on his shoulder the size of a house, fortunately they're not all like that.

From Sally, on Mon 29 Jun 9:37PM
  19. obviously he is a moron, and should support the IRB, and in fact should go one step further and ban him from playing for SA for a year to set an example as the IRB have shown too much mercy for a terrible act of violence by Burger.
to all the people suggesting the lions fans are whingers... not all of us are.. in fact the majority aren;t at all, and have enjoyed an incredibly good series so far.. noone likes to lose so some hot air is bound to be released in the first day or 2 post game.
note also to the Kiwi fan commenting on us whinging.... you lot are terrible when the all blacks lose... i don;t think you've ever lost 'fairly'.. think back to the last world cup when france spanked you off the field. even with the 'forward pass', france deserved to win that one.. the all blacks are of course the best in the world virtualy every year, and a joy to watch.. but maybe you should start (although it doesn;t happen very often) losing with some dignity!!

As a Saffer, I have to agree: this is just the latest in a long list of foot-in-mouth statements, politically naive gaffs and ridiculous antics.
South Africa holds its collective breath every time he opens his mouth, just dreading the idiocy that will emerge.
    PDW should go.
