Premier League - Maldini rejects Chelsea role

Carlo Ancelotti has revealed Paolo Maldini turned down an offer to become part of his coaching staff at Chelsea.

Ancelotti joined the London club from Milan last month and had hoped Maldini would follow him to Stamford Bridge after hanging up his boots at the end of the season.

"I made that proposal to him," said Ancelotti in an interview with Radio Deejay.

"But he wanted to take time off and after so many years playing, it's understandable.

"But if I could have taken anyone to Chelsea, it would have been Maldini."

  1. With or without Maldini by his side, I expect Ancelotti­ to start the season on a high note. His advantage over­ Scolari might be the ability to manage the team on a­ day-to-day basis, as well as keeping their fitness on a­ good level during the training sessions. Only time can­ tell if he will adapt to pace and physical side of the­ Premier League, because from what I've seen, the­ Italian top tier is mostly known for tactical­ approach. Seeing games when defenders just stand and­ don't prevent opposition from getting in the box,­ it makes me wonder if Ancelotti will switch his beliefs­ and Chelsea won't suffer humiliating defeats during­ the course of the season.

What were the following­ all about?? "Thanks captain. On the pitch you were­ an undying champion but you had no respect for those­ who made you rich," read one of the banners­ prepared by Ultras. "For your 25 years of glorious­ service you have the thanks of those who you called­ mercenaries and misers," read another. If the­ message was not necessarily scathing, it was certainly­ pointed. Next came a giant Milan shirt bearing the­ number six and accompanied by the words "There is­ only one captain, [Franco] Baresi."

  20. really would have loved him and think with his­ experience and natural talent he could have done a­ great job but it is understandable.

    you never know,­ maybe he'll miss football and decide a more relaxed­ coaching job is what is needed
