Serie A - Melo to extend Fiorentina deal

Brazil midfielder Felipe Melo has agreed to extend his contract with Fiorentina until 2013.

The 25-year-old had been strongly linked with Arsenal and Internazionale.

The Gunners could still move for him, though, as an unspecified get-out clause has been inserted into the deal.

"Fiorentina announces that its sporting director Pantaleo Corvino met in Milan with Felipe Melo's agent and an agreement was reached to extend the player's contract until 2013 with a buy-out clause also included," the Serie A club said.

Melo joined the Viola last summer from Spanish side Almeria in a transfer deal worth 8 million euros and previously played for Mallorca and Racing Santander.

He made 29 league starts for Fiorentina last season and, while he had disciplinary problems with two red cards and 14 yellows, he helped his side qualify for the Champions League and was part of Brazil's Confederations Cup winning team.
