Transfers - Your view: Too many riches at City?

Eurosport - Tue, 30 Jun 09:46:00 2009

With Manchester City rumoured to be on the verge of clinching a mega-deal for Samuel Eto'o, we ask whether there is room for so many top strikers at one club?

FOOTBALL 2008-2009 Premier League Blackburn Rovers Roque Santa Cruz - 0

City boss Mark Hughes has already brought in Roque Santa Cruz this summer and is thought to be close to luring Carlos Tevez to Eastlands as well.

The idea of a three-pronged strike force is certainly an interesting - and mouth-watering - one, but is it really feasible?

Tevez was unhappy with sitting on the bench at Manchester United, so we can assume he will not want to do the same at his new club across town.

Eto'o will reportedly become the highest-paid player in the Premier League if he signs for City, so again, he will not expect to sit on the sidelines.

And Hughes rates Santa Cruz very highly, having worked with him at Blackburn.

And we haven't even mentioned Robinho, whose role in the team will very much depend on who plays in front of him.

Who will miss out? Or can they indeed play all four together?

That number of top forwards may well be needed in the squad if City are to launch an assault on the Champions League spots, but how difficult will it be to keep all four egos in check?

And what about the likes of Craig Bellamy, Darius Vassell, Benjani, Valeri Bojinov, Jo, Ched Evans and Felipe Caicedo, all of whom are still currently on City's books?

What do you think?

  3. If City put in a late bid for that winger from Wigan, you won't be getting him either.

Thats how United have operated for years (buying Andy Cole bought the title that year).

  6. jimmirice, we know nothing about football haha coming from you, santa cruz was injured most of last season so how would he be able to do anything, eto is 28 not 30 so if we did get him we'd have a good 3-4 season's out of him, ok i agree teves is good not superstar but thats not a done deal neither is eto, i agree with the no star defence it let us down last season we could have easily got top 6 if we had better, but you do know the transfer window doesnt open till tomorrow you chump, we may not win anything next year but neither will you without ronaldo's goals and teves's workrate, i doubt berbaflop will be any help, think you may have to put garry neville up front you thick munich "£$%

i am a cetty fan and i mostly agree with what you are saying, we do have enough young talent with experience and its a shame they wont be given the chance to show that we dont need the money but time to win things. Now we have mega bucks and i will just have to accept it, but even i have to ask myself, if cetty win the EPL next season will i be really that overjoyed, yes i will be but not as overjoyed as i would have been if we had won it with talent brought up through the ranks. Its the same as if england win the world cup next year, will be overjoyed but would be more overjoyed if an english manager was at the healm.
    hope ppl understand my point

  8. Andy you div i could cre less how much deluded city fans pay but even chelsea run their club as a business to try an balance books they fail but they try city spendin dough with no way of makin money is shocking, i dont think its fair on the fans if city bought ashley young, glen johnson, lennon and some good young english players i would be comending them but as it is all you buying is rubbish mercanaries eto tevez santa cruz they wont fit an they certainly wont put up with that twatt robiniho, city fans have been robbed of an exciting future with good young players and have now got over the hil mercanaries

  9. Jimmy, you seem to be misinformed on the way City intend progressing. The owners aren't interested in how many shirts Eto'o or similar can shift. Real have to bank on shirt sales in order to balance the books at the end of the year...City don't. Sucess will be measured on league position and not income.
The question about "how are the fans going to be able to afford" to watch these superstars is quite simple a club with a tight budget and an overdraft of Exxon proportions can only afford to spend within budget, they wont be splashing out several hunder mil on players. City don't have to stick to such a rigid business plan. (Avg) Ticket prices at eastlands have gone down since the new owners took over.

  10. i am going to laugh me pants off when come next season and hughes with his "superstar" team totally flop , i reckon at best they will be in the bottom 8. its ok getting these players, its keeping em happy with trophys and having a decent manager.............put your money on city to flop

From Paul, on Tue 30 Jun 11:05AM
  11. man city fans who agree with these signings obviously no nothing of football, santa cruz is average at best he did nothing last season, tevez is good but not world class although he will be your best player an eto is great player but your gonna lose big time on him he is like 30 so has no resale value your gonna pay ridiculous wages and going to sell a few shirts this is bad buisiness people slag real but you can guarantee they will have merchandised ronaldo to twice the price of buying and his wages before he leaves there, city have no class no star defence an ok midfield an sort of strike force need a manager who has reputaation so players want to join to winn your players except cruz have joined for dough an only dough

From Jimmyrice man u are champs again, on Tue 30 Jun 10:53AM
  12. The "the players have to jell or it won't work" problem. I would rather HAVE the players in the first place, THEN see if i can get them to jell. Instead of wishing so-and-so would come. Jell or no jell, at least the club has the chance.
United also have loads of money (50mil CL, 50mil league, 60mil Cron sale), who on earth is going to sign for them? That winger from Wigan. Fantastic.

From Andy, on Tue 30 Jun 10:45AM
  13. i think money always can't bring success to the team, the clear example is Chelsea, cos they couldn't win the champion's league. i advice Man. city to first bring a world class manager like Guss Hidink and then quality player would come unwantedly to their team, otherwise big players would reject their monster offer like kaka. thanks Hoshang Qaderi from Afghanistan.

From SAM, on Tue 30 Jun 9:28AM
  14. iget tired of listening to all the cr-p being said about man city, trying to buy the league.

  15. The first thing City has to do is to find a class manager, not players. If no good manager is in charged, the result will be same as before even you get all the best players in the world.

  16. The money going round at present, the fee United got for Ronaldo, is killing football clubs...Where do these clubs find so much money, and where do these players think they are worth so much? And how do the clubs expects the fans to find the money to watch these so call superstars kicking a bag of wind around the pitch?

  20. Well thats a bit wierd because the last time i watched Eto'o (iif he comes) and Robhino, one played the right wing and the other played the left..Tevez played behind Berbatov...and RSC played up front...
