Transfers - Your view: Too many riches at City?

Eurosport - Tue, 30 Jun 09:46:00 2009

With Manchester City rumoured to be on the verge of clinching a mega-deal for Samuel Eto'o, we ask whether there is room for so many top strikers at one club?

FOOTBALL 2008-2009 Premier League Blackburn Rovers Roque Santa Cruz - 0

City boss Mark Hughes has already brought in Roque Santa Cruz this summer and is thought to be close to luring Carlos Tevez to Eastlands as well.

The idea of a three-pronged strike force is certainly an interesting - and mouth-watering - one, but is it really feasible?

Tevez was unhappy with sitting on the bench at Manchester United, so we can assume he will not want to do the same at his new club across town.

Eto'o will reportedly become the highest-paid player in the Premier League if he signs for City, so again, he will not expect to sit on the sidelines.

And Hughes rates Santa Cruz very highly, having worked with him at Blackburn.

And we haven't even mentioned Robinho, whose role in the team will very much depend on who plays in front of him.

Who will miss out? Or can they indeed play all four together?

That number of top forwards may well be needed in the squad if City are to launch an assault on the Champions League spots, but how difficult will it be to keep all four egos in check?

And what about the likes of Craig Bellamy, Darius Vassell, Benjani, Valeri Bojinov, Jo, Ched Evans and Felipe Caicedo, all of whom are still currently on City's books?

What do you think?

  1. man city hould have a 3-4-3 or a 4-3-3 formation with tevez, eto and robinho upfront, unless one of them could play on the wing to allow santa cruz room.

  5. d.papas..Nice one How do the teams at the bottom of the table compete with a team that gets 50mil CL, 50mil League, 10-15 mil Cup run, 60mil player sold. Of course United earned the 100 mil...buts it's a load easier maintaining your top4 slot when you have a 100mil headstart on the rest of the league. Thats why the top players end up at United, because they have offered MORE money than the rest, until now. How much is Rooney on?, Rio?, Berbatov? probibly more than the whole of Stokes squad. How many points does United expect to get from the two games against Stoke..all 6 paid for and dusted.
Earned! With respect, i wouldn't call it that.

  6. Can a team ever have enough good players ? take Barcelona and Man United they win lots of things simply because they have very strong squads, 2 players for every position and that's what it takes to be successful.

Mark Hughes has played for both Barca and Utd and i believe he is trying to take a leaf out of their books and
although people might see it as a difficult task to manage all these "big ego's" as it was put, he'll be more than capable, he's had a good upbringing in Fergie and i'd be sure that if any players step out of line (like Robinho and Elano did last season) then they will be dealt with, do not underestimate Mark Hughes he's nobody's fool.

Mark Hughe stated just a few weeks ago that he wanted players in first before he started selling or releasing and when he's happy with the players he's brought in then you will start seeing a lot of them going in the opposite direction.

  7. Andy, the argument about money is that UTD earn theirs! They do basiaclly have a mortgage. But so does half the population! I'm sure city will progress but i think the main complaints about city and chelsea is that players are joining for the wages, i mean Kaká was a joke realy and before him you were after ronaldinho, now its eto'o? And i'm sure you remember the robinho incident (i'm happy to join chelsea) lol! This isn't a dig at city, fair play to em, Just explaining peeps grievances

  8. You remind the player that his ego and the rights to his ego, has been bought for the wages he gets paid...
The same way CRon, Rooney, Berbatov, Ferdinand, Torres, Gerrard, Keane, Crouch, Raul, Toni, Benzema and the rest of the top players are kept in check.

I do find it a bit tiresome to read all the blurb about salery caps now that someone has come along that is willing to pay the rates required to lure top players to the club. It was never ever mentioned when Rio was bought as the most expensive defender of the time or when Becks went to Real..or when Rooney was bought for 30mil. If you happen to have an American owner that had to mortgage the next 5 years worth of TV rights in order to buy and saddle the club with debt...thats because the shareholders of the day wanted to cash in. The money from Cron to go on players or pay off some debt...lets see shall we. Baconface picks the team but Mr Glazer decides how the clubs finances are used.

From Andy, on Mon 29 Jun 12:02PM
  9. Totally agree...no-one said anything about Man Utd buying loads of players!!, Berbaflop at over £30million!!!...not a word!. Disgraceful...come on City, i hope we win the league...then everyone else will say we bought it!!!

  10. defence now has got protection with KOMPANY-BARRY-DE JONG and there still is a long time to go for SPARKY to buy a couple more defenders, i hope sparky signs lescott from everton and hopefully 1 more world class defender and then i think we are in business. so to all them wankxxs who slagged man city i hope you eat your words because city are a force now and i wish SPARKY a great season and i hope he wipes that smile off that scottish bloodnose @#$%s face....CTID

  14. to 3D, Robinho's going no where, Vassell is out of contract thank god, he's over the hill and will be let go on the 1st of July on a free, Boj may stay or may go, he's good when fit, but sadly has had injury after injury, lovely fella though.

  15. The media bias towards Manchester United knows very few bounds, the question of cost was rarely if ever raised when Sir Alex Ferguson spent what was then mega bucks on Eric Cantona and other players from around the world. But now Chelsea and Manchester City are spending big its suddenly a sin. But then we never see bias in ourselves do we?

  16. I can't see how this marriage of stars is going to be anything but an unhappy one.
Too many big egos, too few starting places.

Also, has Sparky forgotten that a solid defence is key to grinding out results in the Premier League?

From willjoss, on Mon 29 Jun 10:26AM
  17. I think that City has bought too many players during the last season. They didn't need Bellamy and they will certainly will lose Vassel, Bojinov and Robinho.Bojinov has great potential. He is young, quick and scores when he has the opportunity.Robinho is the type of player that I call a "dribbler".He has a big arsenal of skills but just couldn be conssistent enough. I have remembered Vassel since the Euro 2004 when he came on as a sub for England. Him and Defoe could be a nice attacking couple. Jo could be to his way to Everton. He is a decent striker but I like him too.

    From 3D, on Mon 29 Jun 10:24AM
  18. Robinho, Eto'o, Tevez when we play good teams like Chelsea Arsenal, United and Petrov, RSC, SWP when we play the midtable teams like Wham, Villa, Everton, and Bojinove and Bellemy when we play the rubbish like Spoors, etc.

From JackBlue, on Mon 29 Jun 10:17AM
  19. yet another @#$% journo trying to stir up @#$%, i'm sick to death of reading such negative @#$% all the time, you need to report to a job center and get a real job because you're clearly no good at at this one.
atleast 6 strikers will be sold so you're argument is utter garbage and Eto'o wont be the highest paid player in the world thats if he comes which he probably wont simply because City sources have stated they wont offer any more than £160,000 a week so please do yourself a favour and report things correctly or better still dont bother reporting at all, go fishing instead and play with your maggot friends.

    From d.collins123, on Mon 29 Jun 10:11AM
  20. Mark Hughes will have to show his skill in man management in keeping the squad happy. I think realistically, the likes of Vassell, Benjani, Caicedo, Evans, and even Bojinov and Bellamy will be out the door at Eastlands this summer...
