Italys Antonio Cairoli maintained his domination of the MX1 class in this years FIM Motocross World Championship, taking the overall win at the first ever Latvian GP in Kegums this weekend. Clement Desalle of Belgium took second place just one point ahead of Yamaha rider Joshua Coppins. Portugals Rui Goncalves took the win in the MX2 class, although finished the day on equal points with Championship leader Marvin Musquin.
Cairoli narrowly missed out on a clean sweep of wins across both motos, hustling Desalle throughout race one and setting a new lap record in the process. Despite a full-bore attack for the top spot on the final lap, he came in just 0.2 seconds behind Desalle in race one. Desalle took an early lead in race two, but a mechanical problem allowed Cairoli to surge into the lead.
KTM rider Marvin Musquin took a one-two in the MX2 class, after an epic battle with KTM teammate Rui Goncalves. Goncalves took the lead in both races but dropped back to fifth place in race one, eventually fighting his way to the runner-up spot with a late charge. Determined to take the top spot, he came out firing in race two, dominating from start to finish and drawing level with teammate Musquin on 47 points for the day. Musquin has now extended his lead over Frenchman Gautier Paulin, sitting 49 points clear at the top of the Championship table.
