Kevin Thomson believes the departure of Barry Ferguson this summer would be a blow for Rangers - but insists life would go on without the deposed skipper.
Ferguson returned to the first team in the latter stages of last season after being stripped of the captaincy and banned by the club for his part in the infamous 'Boozegate' affair.
"Fergie is a top player, he is a top lad," said Thomson of his fellow midfielder. "He is a top player and I've never said anything different. It would be a blow to lose any of your top players but it's a situation that doesn't really involve the players."
He added: "It's something that will be sorted out between him and his advisors and the club. If he's here, great. If he's not, we have to move on."
One player who would arguably be a much bigger loss to Rangers is Steven Davis, who has also been linked with a return south of the border.
Reports at the weekend suggested the Northern Ireland international could be the subject of a £5million bid from Sunderland.
Thomson admits he is not surprised the midfielder has been linked with a move back to England's top flight.
"Steve is a top player and I'm sure he will be linked with a lot of clubs," he said.
"He was absolutely fantastic last season and most of the boys at Murray Park would be delighted to keep him.
"Hopefully I will see him on July 9 and fingers crossed he will be playing for Rangers next season."

Pt15...Wattie had to spend big to get the league back and get CL footie...which he only did this year
A bank that will give us money for a start...Metz u r always going back to the past.....we were a disgrace before the bunnet with the Kellys but those days are gone....If Celtic had kept GS and then told us that 10 of the squad were being moved on for very little money and that we would supplement the squad with youth and we were in £20 million of debt there would be an massive outcry......
Stuart, big wattie had to spend big coz of the state that plg left us in,I wish you could understand that point,if plg hadnt wasted cash on duds, wattie wouldnt have needed to spend as much as he has done, there are gud managers & bad plg for us barnes& dalgliesh for you, when they left you spent big,its just part of the game, you may be in credit now but it took years for you to get there, fact!!
yes we do need to sell to buy, difference being though big fella,we got some leverage, scottish champs, european football, what you got to offer???
only most of the boys at murray park would like to keep Davis, that would suggest there are some who would be happy to see him go. Wonder who they are?????????
HAIL HAIL!
Pt7...Metz u said that Moobs would not sign, when nothing was said by Celtic then he signed...Managers dont move unless there is money there to upgrade the team....ask Wattie who has spent more than Celtic since his time back
Metz we have a list though that means theres money to buy....M8 I am not going off on one hear and I am only going on facts.....Rangers need to sell to buy....Hendami (no cash back) Dailly (No cash back) Smith (No cash back) Bazza (1 mill) Adam (500k max)McCulloch (500k max) Niguez (No cash back) Steve Smith (500k max) Novo (500k max) Beasley (500k Max)...thats max £3.5 million back from losing 10 players!!!!!!!!!
havin a list & gettin the players to sign on are two different things big fella, even fortune didnt jump at the 1st chance to sign up and hes played for the firemen!!!
Metz...Celtic have said there will be cash for players and why not we are not in debt.....Rangers have said that they will get rid of 10 of the 2008/9 season squad and add to the squad with players from the youths and not one thing about buying anyone in..Hendami, Dailly, Graeme Smith are gone who the other 7......thats the point
Pt7...Metz I think u will find that the 3 fireman are back at work unlike Wattie and Ally.....Mowbray has given his list to Dermot and Lawell and wheels are in motion....my mate who is a GM at an SPL club told me that after July 1st all hell will break loose
Stuart, should you no be concerning yourself with the lack of news on the transfer front at septic?? Forgive me if I`m wrong but doesn`t your season kick off before ours??? You no worried that the 3 firemen have done feck all since being in place???
pt1 i agre with you apart from thomson i think he needs to up his game or sell him hes done nothing and i realy dont rate him in midfield hes like a headless chicken
Lads...U seem to be forgetting a little point here....Thomson and Edu WILL NOT BE FIT TO PLAY, along with Broadfoot TILL LATE SEPTEMBER...league starts a little earlier than that
not a big ferguson fan myself, too much back passing & ball greedy, gud point paul, but think we need a strong winger type,some1 in the mould of a lovenkrands/cooper(but where would we find him!!)
sorry about the spelling
gud point paul b but what formation would we play if thommo edu and mendes arent exactly wigers 4 2 3 1
i think rangers would be alot better without barry ferguson id rather have mendes davies edu thompson in midfield rangers wil get stronger without ferguson and have a look rangers have scored more goals without him we play attackin football rangers to get 2 in a row
