Bundesliga - Van der Vaart 'set for Real Madrid'

Eurosport - Wed, 30 Jul 11:24:00 2008

Hamburg midfielder Rafael van der Vaart will complete his switch to Real Madrid next week after negotiations are concluded following the game between the two sides in London, according to Spanish daily Marca.

The Spanish giants are reported to have lodged a new bid of 10 million euros (£7.8 million) and expect that to be accepted, allowing talks to begin between the clubs and the player's representative.

With Cristiano Ronaldo's arrival from Manchester United looking increasingly unlikely, Madrid have turned their attentions to other players after Bernd Schuster pleaded with the club's hierarchy to add to his squad.

Van der Vaart has been on the club's wanted list for months, but with all the focus placed on signing just one player Los Merengues are now having to push on with Plan B.

The Netherlands international recently expressed an interest in joining the Spanish champions, paving the way for an approach.

"If I leave Hamburg it will only be for a big club like Real Madrid," said the 25-year-old.

Hamburg meet Real Madrid in the Emirates Cup at Arsenal's stadium on Saturday and then play Juventus on Sunday, giving Van der Vaart two chances to showcase his talent to Schuster.

Real president Ramon Calderon has backed down over his plans not to sign anyone should Ronaldo not be available and relented for the sake of the coach who asked for new faces to freshen things up.

According to Marca, Hamburg have decided to sell and will use the money to find a replacement and, after turning down just 6 millon euros (£4.7 million) last week, are expected to accept the improved offer.

  1. Gaybo Sounds you are right. But why English players are so expensive? Although I think that Bentley is a quality player is he really worth 18 £ million? I think the price is too high considering the fact that for example RvP cost 2.5 £ when he has left Feyenoord

  2. Why is he so cheap? Because in one year he can buy his contract out for £1.5 million. So, of course, his value is low.

Why have no Engish teams bought him? Well the examples given [Spurs going for Modric, Portsmouth for SWP, Sunderland for Bent etc] are not options for Van der Vaart - he will ONLY go to a top, top side.

Which only leaves the top four - none of whom need yet another attacking midfielder. United have loads, Chelsea will struggle to keep theirs happy next season, Arsenal need defensive midfielders and Liverpool want a Barry-type playmaker DM [but only if Alonso leaves]. So where does he go? Wigan? Nah. I'm just surprised Barcelona, Inter, Juve, Milan and Roma have been so quiet.

  3. I think Real Madrid should just take their minds off Mr CR7 and stay focussed with the mouth watering deals they closed on Van der Vart. the chap will surely prove himself before the end of the upcoming season

  4. i don't think van der vaart is so cheap.

  5. the only reason that van der vart is cheap is because he has only one year left in his contract so if hamburg doesnt sell him this transfer window he could sign for any club for free in january under the busman rulling
tip for a very good fantasy striker with low price keep an eye on amr zaki (wigan)

  6. if van der vaart play for english team, real would have to pay at least 25m pound. i think spurs is stupid because they paid 16m pound for modric while more established, more experienced and better player in form of van der vaart would only cost half the price they pay for modric. now they going to pay 18m pound for bentley and 20m pound for arshavin. if wenger do business, he could find someone else as good as them but half the price.

  7. For those comparing the price of english players to those from oversea's, it's mostly because there's so much money in the Premiership and the press tend to hype up our players, leading to stupidly high fees (SWP, Bently, Darren Bent etc).
Must say this is an absolute steal for Madrid. He's a great player and for 8m you can't go wrong.

  8. A lot of people saying that those english club should buy Van der Vaart.
But he already said he only want to move to spain, otherwise he would stay at Hamburg.

  10. Van der Vaart is a quality, such a bargain at the cheap price Real Madrid will get him for. Just think of all those English players that hold a massive transfer fee & can't even quailify for the Euros that have just finished. No wonder the Premiership is full of stars from overseas ! ! ! David Bentley = £18 million or Rafael Van der Vaart = £7.8 million. I know who I rather have.....

From Gaybo, on Wed 30 Jul 12:47PM
  11. This is a good example to Benitez,he should buy van der vaart..rather than trying to buy barry for over 15 million.smart move real madrid..

  12. finally real madrid are buying cheap but good players

  13. The were saying on the tv this morning that English players hold a higher premium. How does that work? English players are brilliant, look how many trophies we have won in th last....er.....how many years?! Van der Vaart Is Quality, Real Madrid are playing the transfer game well for once...

From Barry Lee P, on Wed 30 Jul 12:27PM
  14. That's the thing with real Madrid, because players want to go there anyway they buy cheap. Remember Ruddy for £10 mil. If you say no they go out and get an alternative.

  15. I agree with you shin 1billion percent

From garyhoxha, on Wed 30 Jul 12:26PM
  16. Surely for that sort of money an English club must have dabble! He's a better player than Bentley in my opinion and it looks like he's off to Spurs for 17 million.

    From brooksie6870@..., on Wed 30 Jul 12:25PM
  17. so damn CHEAP!!!
this would buy you lots of van der vaartssssss.......are you hearing? hull city? or perhaps, LIVERPOOL???

    From ronalho2008, on Wed 30 Jul 12:23PM
  18. How can that offer be accepted, in enland £7.8m doesn't even get you half of Barry and there is no way hes twice as good, bizzare!

From Hobitez, on Wed 30 Jul 12:03PM
  19. much better business isn't it. instead of paying Marca every week and looking to break the bank with a 60 million bid for CR, they are now using their brains a little.
