Alonso hands in transfer request - report

Thu, 30 Jul 11:56:54 2009

Xabi Alonso's departure from Liverpool has moved a giant step forward with claims that he has submitted a transfer request.

Liverpool have not confirmed the latest move in the saga of the midfielder's potential departure to Real Madrid, but sources close to the club insist the 28-year-old has formally asked to leave, according to a report in the Liverpool Echo.

Previously he had only held meetings with Rafael Benitez and verbally told the Anfield boss of his desire to quit.

This latest move will pave the way to his departure, with Real on the brink of making a £28million compromise bid for the Spain international.

Alonso is due back for training on Thursday from a short holiday at his San Sebastian home. But Benitez had told Alonso that he wanted the uncertainty around the player's future to be sorted out before the weekend one way or another.

  1. If Alonso wants out there's nothing any one can do. Real Madrid didn't want him before he came to L-Pool and at 28 if he doesn't make an instant impact he will rue the day he left Anfield. Knowing Madrids reputation for 'So Called Stars' it may be Alonso will end up a part time player and offered back to us for a lot less, remember this almost happened with M Owen! Good Luck Alonso, your going to need it

  2. If Alonso want's to go then Rafa should sell him, there is no point in keeping a player who has had their head turned by another club. What I don't like about this is that Real have done it again, used a continual media bombardment to secure a players' transfer and nothing is gonna be done about it. I will always remeber Xabi as a truely classy midfield schemer, but I wish he had just put in a transfer request at the end of last season and not let this drag on as long as it has. It will be very difficult to negotiate a deal for a suitable replacement in the two weeks before the PL starts.

  3. Rafa used the money to buy david silva or david vila to replace alonso

  4. Rafa please don!t let him go bcos he would be to hard to replace

  5. Give Lucas a chance, the Brazilian coach, Gerrard and Rafa rate him and who are you to doubt them. At the end of last season he started playing well and again in Pre-season. He's also got a better engine than Alonso and does support the forwards, remember he's still only young.
Alonso will be difficult to replace but we said that about Keegan and got Dagleish, Souness and we replaced him albeit with two players.
We'll still beat the Mancs this year.

  7. If he doesn't want to play for us, not much Rafa can do -- and it's understandable he might want to play for a Spanish side, he is Spanish!! BUT -- why didn't he do this earlier if he wanted to go?

While Alonso is a great player, and we will miss him, I don't think he has handled this in the proper way, and I think that will always sour my memories of him.

  8. Dont worry all you Liverpool Fans.

If the players heart is nolonger with the club he plays for then he should go.

Remember Euro cup final Ronaldo play for 10 mins didnt score and spent the rest of the match waiting for the final whistle.

Liverpool have had many great players,Keegan.Rush,Owen, Hansen to name but a few and have always like Man U come back stronger with new players.

Your time will come again but as I am a Man U fan I hope it isnt to soon.

Good luck for 2009/10 season both our teams will finish in the top 4 again and do well in Euros

  10. If it means we could buy the likes of David Silva with the money then I wouldn't be overly bothered... Alonso's a good player but then if his heart isn't in staying there's little point forcing him to. My main worry would be that Lucas will get more games...

  12. If this is actually true. then Rafa please let him go.But our 35Million Pounds plus Ramos must be acquired even if Alonso will complete Real's 25Million short. What we want is someone who is dedicated like Torres,SG etc
