Gay targets 9.5 second mark

Eurosport - Sun, 30 Aug 22:22:00 2009

Tyson Gay is recovering from losing his world 100 metre and 200 metre crowns by setting his sights firmly on the 9.5 second mark as long as Usain Bolt does not get there first.

ATHLETICS Tyson Gay World Championships Berlin 2009 - 0

The American came out second best at the World Athletics Championships in Berlin in August, claiming silver behind Bolt in the 100m before having to watch from the sidelines as the flying Jamaican smashed the world record in the 200m a few days later.

And Gay was denied the chance for revenge in the relay when, for the second consecutive major championships, the Americans fluffed up their heat and were disqualified for an illegal handover between Shawn Crawford and Darvis Patton.

But the American is a tough cookie to break down and with trademark confidence Gay insists he is focusing on the positives from Berlin, where he set a new American record of 9.77 seconds in the 100m final, despite a niggling groin injury which ruled him out of defending his 200m title.

"I was happy with the medal and the performance," said Gay. "I had a little bit of pain with my groin so I still felt victorious in my own way. It made me glad I didn't quite and give up.

"But I know I can run a lot faster I've been saying that since day one. I really believe 9.5 seconds is possible. I know it sounds strange for a guy who's best is 9.7 to say that but I honestly believe it it's been one of my goals since I started running.

"Although I told my coach Jon Drummond I've stopped writing goals down because Usain keeps breaking them before I do! But the bottom line is, if I stay healthy and train hard, I believe I can get myself to that level.

"The time Usain ran was amazing and unfortunately it wasn't me on that day but it's just about getting healthy again."

Gay has been plagued with injuries since scooping triple gold in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay at the World Championships in Osaka two years ago.

A hamstring strain at the Olympic trials in 2008 meant the 27-year old missed out on the 200m in Beijing and hampered the American's preparation so much that he failed to make the 100m final.

And a persistent groin complaint this season prevented Gay from admitting to 100 per cent fitness at any point in the year.

But as he prepares for one of his last events of the season, the British Grand Prix in Gateshead on Monday, Gay is adamant he will take his rivalry with Usain Bolt to new levels when he returns, fully fit, next season.

"I'm going to be back to 100 per cent next season," said Gay. "The groin problems have been a setback this year and my groin has been constantly sore.

"I would have liked to have been competing but it wasn't too difficult to watch. I knew there was a possibility I wasn't going to be able to run and I knew my body wasn't able to go through another three runs.

  1. @Dillard: My humble assertion is that Darvis Patton has so much more in his tank than Gay.....work on Patton and Rodgers.....then if Dix can overcome his injury troubles, you sure will have a team to rival the Jamaican war chest.

  2. The 100m is about who (on the day) has the perfect execution at take off..........Bolt's humble enough never to be dragged into what time he would run. Rather, he humbly tells the world that 'anything's possible'...and that's the hallmark of respect for his sport...Let's cast aside the Bolt/ Gay debate (cos it's really about the Yanks getting beaten at their game!!!!need we say more).
The real issue is how to get the IAAF to erase Flo Jo's and Marion Jone's steroid enabled performances; so we can get some much long overdue respect back to the Women's sprint events......How these Americans evaded the drugs testing Czars beats me till date...and, no pretense folks; we all knew these ladies were on drugs, we knew!!!

  3. It took Carl Lewis his whole career to drop from the 9.93s to 9.86, that is 7/100s. what makes you think that Tyson Gay "is good" so he can run 9.6, that is 11/100s less from where he is now at 28? If Gay is "good" what was Carl Lewis, average?! If you know anything about ahtletics, you know that that's impossible. Even his 9.71 run was on the border of being suspicious. 9.6 and 9.5 are out of his natural ability and everybody's natural ability for that matter, expect Bolt's. If Gay really does run even 9.6(but i don't think he will), I will have no doubt whatsoever that he's on some new undetectable super drug. If Bolt does 9.5 it's OK because he's still too young for a sprinter and physically a magnification of the rest.

  4. as someone already mentioned it, Gay said before berlin that he needed to run 9.6 to beat Bolt and he believed he could do that. but now bolt is in the 9.5 and is talking about doing 9.4 or lower wich a lot of people believe he can.so what? every time bolt sets the mark lower is he gonna say that he has to do it too? its good to be ambitious but sometines you should recognize someone utter superiority. and they achieved something you cannot.
plus its weird that he keeps running despite being that injured. if you re really injured why would u keep running especially in lower events?
anyway he is good so maybe he can reach 9.6 but Bolt will be lower by that time.
anybody noticed that there was no mention of the 200m WR which is Gay main event by the way. how come he hasnt said he has to run 19.1 too

    From saganon971, on Wed 2 Sep 2:56AM
  5. Bolt didn't want to run against Tyson Gay today because he knows that Gay would beat him. Bolt is know fool, he took the 200 instead. You might say that bolt has already beat Tyson Gay which is true but bolt also knows that Tyson was good and rested. Bolt knew that he would have to run better than 9.81 to beat Tyson Gay and he didn;t have it in him. I give it to bolt he dosen't want to give Tyson Gay any type of edge. Bolt knows that everytime he race againt Tyson Gay, he will have to be at his best!

  6. Asia A, 22: How can you be so naive??? Flo Jo was never proven to take drugs? Is that really enough for you to believe she was clean? Marion Jones wasn't caught either. If you knew anything about athletics (or simply human nature), you just wouldn't believe that a top athlete (she was already) can suddenly at the age of 28(!) change to a completelely different level, naturally. Before 28 she was world class, medal winner, but otherwise all looked normal. Then all of a sudden she lowers the WR by 30/100 of a second. Do yourself a favour and try to use your brain. Flo Jo was the most in your face cheat of them all.

  7. Tyson Gay says he is injured yet he still has races he doesn't seem to be in any form of pain after he runs so what's his game is he just a sore loser. Bolt has beaten him every time they have raced together all the hate over the Jamaicans doing so well, probably people should do some research on athletics in Jamaica their training and competition from school and stop hating on Jamaica. Why only US produce spinters and Kenya and Ethiopia produce distance runners - oh I forget Jamaica is a small island yet if you look at their contribution to athletics Sanya Richards, US; Donovan Bailey, Canada I could go on never mind the British team everybody starts giving Jamaica some love, Usian Bolt get over it he's the king he rules - who don't like it - eat your heart out.

  9. Flo Jo was never founded to be taken drugs. she was already tested for drugs. This time is the Jamaican era but I think it will be short-lived. I didn't like that Shelly Ann Fraser and Kerron Stewart didn't give their 100% but ran a casual race in Zurich. If they don't care about winning there then they shouldn't have showed up. I don't think Tyson Gay is making up excuses. People have to read these articles with a critical mind because the writer is usually the one that's writing in euphemisms and trying to start trouble. If Tyson didn't have a groin problem he wouldn't be undergoing surgery. Bolt is indeed the fastest man and it will be that way for awhile. However, I can see the Jamaican women taking a back seat to the Americans in the coming years. Jamaica shouldn't get their head swollen and bring rift to the Americans because America is respecting their game so don't start trouble. That person who made that statement about Flo Jo taking steroids and cheating is a lie and unfair. Don't think Jamaica is all that good that they think they even better than Flo Jo. Flo Jo was never proven to taken any drugs or steroids, though she was on a high protein diet. I just can't wait until the American women team bounce back.

  10. Jesus, I'm reading some very naive comments here...I don't know what's Tyson Gay's game, but there's something wrong about him. I mean Gay is a very talented runner, but physiologically he's average. As far as averagely built runners go, the only dream of shaving 2-3/100 of a sec off their PB at Gay's age, now he says he can shave off 20/100s... I mean just because Bolt is doing something that has never been done before (and he's young and still getting stronger), it doesn't mean that suddenly all runners have become magically capable of doing similar feats. So there are two options, either Gay is a day dreamer or something dirty is going on...

"In america, a new sprinter comes up every year." It's been 2 years now, they are slow in the making.
"Bolt is only one man! Without Bolt his team wouldn't be nothing".....Without Bolt, Jamaica would be 2 gold medals less. They still would have won the 4x100metres relay. If you are not aware they won much more than Bolt's 2 individual medals.
Be humble and listen to analyst like Michael Johnson and Bobby Kersee, I believe they are Americans and very knowledge about the sport, who are recognising that Jamaica is the new sprint factory.
Thanks to blood testing for drugs, America doesn't look that dominant at all. Poor Marion Jones, Flo-Jo, et.al.

  13. Someone from america is going to hold the world record again and they won't need steroids to do it and it won't take 20 years to do it. Bolt is not invinceable! He has raised the bar true enough. Tyson Gay isn't making excuses, the doctors from Germany knows that. In america, a new sprinter comes up every year. I think Tyson Gay is wrong to say that he's looking to run 9.50, but 9.30 should be his target. Everyone knows the standard now.The american sprinter's are not afraid of anyone. Bolt is only one man! Without Bolt his team wouldn't be nothing.

  14. Forget about the "groin injury", when Usain first broke the 100m World Record (9.72secs) in New York it was a FULLY FIT Tyson Gay he powered past. That was the beginning of Tyson playing 2nd fiddle.

From David, on Mon 31 Aug 6:33PM
  15. Usain bolt is the best. Tyson gay can keep making excuses about groin injury. I believe that is the tactics he is using to make us believe he can do better to beat Bolt

  17. Tyson Gay is a great runner. 9.71 on a bad groin is pretty remarkable. Unfortunately for him he is in the Bolt era. Maybe he can run 9.5 maybe he can't. But he is approaching 30. Meanwhile Bolt is 23 and not yet at his prime. If Usain Bolt runs the 100m full out and stop looking around or glancing at the clock just before crossing the finish line, he could do 9.4.
