Serie A - Imperious Inter thrash Milan

Eurosport - Sun, 30 Aug 09:28:00 2009

Internazionale thrashed rivals Milan after three first-half strikes gave Jose Mourinho's side a 4-0 victory in their Serie A clash at the San Siro.

FOOTBALL 2009-2010 Serie A Milan-Inter Milito - 0

Thiago Motta gave the Nerazzurri the lead on the half-hour mark, rounding off a slick exchange from Diego Milito and his strike-partner Samuel Eto'o with a precise left-footed finish.

Milan skipper Gennaro Gattuso sustained an early injury and was exposed as Eto'o streaked clear on goal with the midfielder hauling the Cameroonian down in the box.

Gattuso was booked for the infringement and Milito stepped up to dispatch the penalty emphatically down the middle of the goal to double Inter's lead.

Clarence Seedorf was the intended replacement for Gattuso but the Dutchman dallied long enough for his captain to pick up a second booking for a crude challenge on debutant Wesley Sneijder.

Inter's pressure was incessant and a third goal was added on the stroke of half-time to compound Milan's misery as their fans showed their displeasure.

Maicon played an exquisite one-two with Milito on the edge of the Milan box before coolly slotting home a clinical finish to further stun the Rossoneri.

The fourth goal was worth waiting for and it came from an innocuous position as Dejan Stankovic unfurled a piledriver from 30 yards to beat Marco Storari in stunning fashion.

The cameras were trained on Milan coach Leonardo and his counterpart Mourinho as the pair's fortunes became starkly contrasted.

Sneijder made his debut after signing from Real Madrid during the week, while Walter Samuel and Cristian Chivu also stepped in as Mourinho made three changes.

Milan reacted to their dismal first-half showing with a double change as Massimo Ambrosini and Clarence Seedorf replaced the ineffectual Marco Borriello and Mathieu Flamini.

The tempo of the play in the second half was notably more pedestrian than the first as Inter were content to keep possession and consolidate their lead.

Sneijder unleashed a rasping shot from 30 yards which dipped viciously and grazed the crossbar on its way out of play as the Dutchman further distinguished himself in the 60th minute.

Eto'o had a fourth goal disallowed in the three minutes later and it was a correct decision with the striker having strayed offside before he headed past Storari.

It was an inauspicious way for Sneijder's compatriot Klass-Jan Huntelaar to make his debut for Milan as a substitute midway through the second half, and the striker was able to make little impact.

As disgruntled Milan fans streamed out of the exits, no one was left in any doubt that a strong statement for the new campaign had been made by the Serie A Champions.

Bari 0-0 Bologna

Bari were held to a 0-0 draw by Bologna at San Nicola with substitute Ferdinando Sforzini sent off in stoppage time.

A drab affair was notable for the red card shown to a frustrated Sforzini in the 90th minute for violent conduct.

Daniele De Vezze was by far the most potent threat for the hosts, but neither side was able to create clear-cut opportunities to break the deadlock.
