Midfield duo back for Toon

Sun, 30 Aug 13:30:06 2009

Newcastle midfield duo Joey Barton and Nicky Butt are expected to be passed fit for the home clash with Coca-Cola Championship rivals Leicester.

Barton sustained a foot injury in the latter stages of the 3-0 home win over Reading on August 15 and has subsequently missed the last three games.

He was not risked for the midweek Carling Cup victory over Huddersfield but is now in line for a return.

Meanwhile, Butt was forced off at half-time against the Terriers with a foot problem but was expected to train over the weekend and come into contention to face the Foxes.

However, Newcastle face a striker shortage with Andy Carroll and Xisco ruled out with groin injuries and leading scorer Shola Ameobi doubtful with a foot problem.

  2. Unfortunately, Jonas is injured too!
The only option is to play Smith up front; Ranger is not ready to play up front on his own.
If Smith gets the ammo, he will score - he's done it countless times before as a striker, especially in this league!

  3. Play Barton and Butt in mid-field with nolan playing behind Nile Ranger . Leave shola on the bench unless we are behind and rest him. Play the lad from utd at Full back and Taylor wide right for width Jonas on the left with Enrique also at Full back Taylor and coliflour in central defence
