UFC close to Dublin bout

The UFC are set to announce that the Republic of Ireland will host an event in Dublin in January.

The organisation are planning a card on January 17 at the O2 Arena and billed as UFC 93.

And early indications suggest Rich Franklin could possibly take on Chuck Liddell or Mauricio 'Shogun' Rua in a stand-out headliner at the new arena, which officially opens on December 21.

Another rumoured fight being considered for the event is the much-anticipated welterweight showdown between Matt Hughes and Matt Serra.

If the Dublin event goes ahead, the welterweight title fight between BJ Penn and Georges St Pierre - tentatively scheduled for SuperBowl weekend - will become UFC 94.

UFC officials recently came back from a promotional tour of the Philippines and revealed they are planning to stage an event in the country sometime "in the summer of 2009."

"The Philippines is definitely happening, we're working on that right now, Australia and Germany, those three are right now," UFC president Dana White (pictured) said this week.

The UFC have already successfully held several events outside the USA after venturing into Canada, Northern Ireland and England, where they have held bouts in London and Manchester, with UFC 89 coming from Birmingham on October 18.

  1. Rear Naked News should be given credit. They had it first and you took it from them. If it isn't true, who are your sources for the match-ups you listed?

  2. I posted this story two days ago after reading about the Ireland show on Tatame. I then spoke with a contact within the UFC and was told about the possible fights, which I listed in my article. Suddenly they appear in your article, without any sources listed except for "rumors".

Oh, and my site was on the front page of Yahoo US MMA this weekend. Would be quite easy for a hack to find, steal, and never credit. If you want real MMA news, check out Rear Naked News.
