Injury-plagued Blackburn Rovers midfielder Steven Reid has returned to the Ireland squad for their final two home World Cup qualifiers.

FOOTBALL Stephen Reid, Ireland - 0

Reid, absent from the squad for nearly a year with a knee injury, joins the provisional 27-man squad for the table-topping clash with Italy on October 10 and final Group 8 fixture against Montenegro four days later.

However there was still no place in the extended squad for Sunderland midfielder Andy Reid while fellow midfielder Stephen Ireland of Manchester City's self-imposed exile continues.

Ireland, unbeaten in their opening eight group games, trail leaders Italy by four points and hold a comfortable five-point lead over third-placed Bulgaria.

Giovanni Trapattoni will also lead Ireland's Euro 2012 qualifying campaign after the Italian manager signed a new two-year contract.

Dzhanayev has established himself as undisputed number one at his club Spartak Moscow this season, relegating experienced Croatian keeper Stipe Pletikosa to the bench.

Hiddink also recalled Dmitry Torbinsky for the first time in nearly six months after the Lokomotiv Moscow midfielder recovered from a number of injuries.

  1. ENGLAND WORLD CUP 2010... MY 24 MAN SQUAD.
    Goalkeepers: Foster, Green, James

Midfielders: Lennon, Walcott, Hargreaves, Barry, Gerrard, Lampard, A.Young, Milner,P.Neville
    Forwards: Rooney, Defoe, Bent, C.Cole

I've gone for P.Neville, more as cover than anything else, if we got injuries to defenders or midfielders, Neville is one of the few players who can come in and do a job, I've decided against Carrick, because he's useless. I've left out Joe Cole because he's injury prone, but mind you, so is Hargreaves, but Hargreaves is more likely to start for us. No place for Becks, and no place for Wright-Phillips, purely because I feel Walcott and Lennon are more special, and I've gone for Milner because he's so adaptable and a work horse. Up front I dislike target men, so I've gone for more goal scorers and pace and movement, but thrown in Cole, because he's so much better than Heskey, but I would consider Crouch instead. Agbonlahor could also push Bent for a place, but as of right now, it's Bent.
