Sports minister Vitaly Mutko has revealed Russia could bid to host Euro 2020 if they decide against tabling a bid for the 2018 World Cup.
The race to host the 2018 World Cup is proving to be one of the most hotly contested yet with England, Australia and the United States among those expressing interest, while a joint bid from Spain and Portugal is also in the offing.
"There's the possibility that we will be candidates to organise one or the other competition," Mutko (pictured) said.
Russia have not hosted a World Cup or European Championship before but the Champions League final was held in Moscow this year.
Mutko is hoping they can draw on their successful bid to host the Winter Olympics in Sochi in 2014 to aid them in the process.
"We want to organise a sporting event of the highest level," Mutko added. "Nevertheless, we have to take a very close look at all the possibilities.
"We have to have 12 host towns ready and have available at least a dozen stadiums with 40,000 seats for the tournament.
"On the other hand, Russia will organise the Olympic Games in 2014 and the University Games in 2013.
"And we will have a very serious approach when it comes to the dossier."

sappercommando2 you are so stupud!!!!! Russia very friendly country! Так, что пошёл нах отсюд а! Фашис т прокл ятый!
racist country
Narcotics, illegal weapons, prostitution, child pornography, sport and politics have one thing in mind in that state....they are all mafia owned, which in turn supports terrorism. For that reason, countries like Russia and China, with their human rights abuses should never be supported in any shaper of form till they get the shackles of people's hands and let them live the life they want to. These are totalitarian regimes puppeting themselves as sport loving and travel nations, where travelling in such places is putting your life in extreme danger. Fancy a World Cup there. The only ones who would gain from this event are the large mafia ridden corporations. Do you think that staging the World Cup in South Africa in 2010 shall solve the plight and hunger there? The only winners are the large corrupted corporations and the losers are those whose taxes are raised significantly to fund such nonsense. The same goes for Russia, which is in certain aspects even worse.
Not Provided, your comments about the British are true to a certain extent though. But at the end of the day, I ask myself where your sources for this are.
Not Provided,
Well for starters, I am proud to say that I am not British so your funny assumptions is just that....funny.
Did you know of the faked fireworks display that happened in China. The Chinese like their Soviet brothers are just as corrupt and what is funny, they have idiots like you believing their tripe. You seem to be some sort of do gooding naive person who would be best suited for politics. Not only do you lie through your back teeth, not only do you believe your own lies, you expect everyone to believe them too. Do you have a Russian wife or something that you are so supportive of that Mafia ridden crowd?
Remember the World Cup was created and designed with the purpose of bringing humanity together and not to be used as a political tool or platform to air grievances and further short sighted political goals. Name calling and allegation of Mafia involvement are self serving and shallow to say the least. Hosting the World Cup is a big time investmeny so if Russia with its massive gas resources are capable of winning, why not. Remember China was potrayed in the same way and guess what, we had one of the best everr Olympic Extravaganza. You sound like a brit, I can understand your frustaration when all of your colonies are gone. The only way you can flex your muscles is to be a poodle of the united states like your former PM Tony Blair. Give the Russians a break......
What in Russia? In that corrupt hole? No doubt the vote shall be rigged by the Russian Mafia. I wouldn't give that lot of scumbags the honour of anything at all. Russians are corrupt to the core.
