Barcelona have confirmed that captain Carles Puyol has signed a new contract tying him to the Catalan giants until the summer of 2013.
Puyol (pictured) has beenwith the club for 17 years since he joined as a schoolboy from local team La Pobla de Segur and was expected to put pen to paper after verbally agreeing terms.
"A week after the announcement of Carles Puyol's renewal, the Barca captain signed his new contract, the Spanish and European champions said on their website. "The contract ties him to Barcelona until 2013.
"The release clause of this new contract has been fixed at 10 million euros."
Puyol has won 10 trophies with Barca, including two Champions Leagues, three Liga titles and one Copa del Rey.
He also won Euro 2008 with Spain, for whom he has 79 caps.
The 31-year-old, who has made over 450 appearances for his club and was just short-listed for the FIFA World Player of the Year award, is delighted to have signed the contract.
"I am very happy in the confidence the club, the coach and my team-mates have put in me," Puyol told Barca TV.
"The fans also played a key part in my decision to stay as they constantly show me their support, as much in the good moments as in the bad.
"I know that it is not like here anywhere else."

Old an ugly! Hala Madrid!
those are really good news!
First of all, Puyol signed the contract last week. And second of all his release contract is not 10m, it's 100m. For 10m any team would go and buy Capitan Karisma.
