The Italian, who also dominated the free practice session in the morning, kept control of the pace again and claimed pole position with a best lap of a one minute 51.964 seconds - which he clocked after only four laps.

The track temperature was 44°C when the pitlane opened and Valsecchi took the lead on his first flying lap.

Roldan Rodriguez at Scuderia Coloni, Diego Nunes at Meritus and the impressive Fabio Leimer at Ocean Racing all had spells on top but Valsecchi eventually got back in front and would not be denied.

Things did not go quite as well for Meritus' Luca Filippi. He was third midway through the session but then he had a gearbox problem and eventually had to settle for fourth.

Sam Bird at ART eventually clocked the second best time while Leimer will start in third.

After Filippi in fourth comes by Rodriguez, Rodolfo Rodriguez at Arden, James Jakes at Super Nova, Johnny Cecotto at Trident and Josef Kral in the second Super Nova car.
