Mowbray puts brave face on slip-ups

Fri, 30 Oct 15:38:18 2009

Tony Mowbray will have to answer some tough questions at Celtic's AGM on Friday after the Hoops crashed out of the Co-operative Insurance Cup at the quarter-final stage on Wednesday night with a 1-0 defeat by Hearts at Parkhead.

The Celtic boss watched his side go top of the Clydesdale Bank Premier League with a win at Hamilton on Sunday but once again his team slipped up in front of their own fans and have now won only twice in nine attempts at Celtic Park since he arrived in the summer.

The crowd of around 20,000 indicated an apathy which is sure to be another worry for the Parkhead board, but Mowbray said: "I think we would be concerned if we weren't making chances but we are making chances every game we play and it will click."

He added: "In a stadium that is normally more atmospheric, we showed great desire to win a football match.

"I didn't see a lack of belief. I seen a very positive team playing against a team who deserve credit for defending as well as they did.

"We deserved better than we got but sometimes you don't get what you deserve in football. We take it on the chin and move on to the next game."

Gorgie midfielder Michael Stewart scored from the spot in the 58th minute after Danny Fox had tripped Christian Nade inside the Celtic box.

Mowbray had left strikers Scott McDonald and Georgios Samaras on the bench but hurried them on immediately after going behind.

However, the Greece international missed a series of chances to equalise before the final whistle brought a crescendo of boos down from the stands.

To compound another frustrating night for the home side, skipper Stephen McManus was deservedly red-carded for an outrageous lunge at Andrew Driver as the Jambos wide-man tried to speed past him with seconds remaining.

  1. Stuart ........I do not know where you got your figures from, but rather than getting into a financial arguement please justify your claim that 4 trophies in two years is not "doing too well".

  2. Not all doom and gloom bhoys, least we are not skint like the filthy mob.

I would give Mowbray till feb and see how things are then with new signing etc...

Kills me to say it as a Celtic fan that stephen macmanus's tackle was appaling and he deserved to go.....

One more thing.why was Donati let go when he was playing his best since coming to celtic?

  3. why should we grin and bear it? why should we put up with 2 home wins from 9? Why should we part with scandalous amounts of money to watch utter drivel like this?
Why is Mowbray still in a job?
Give him time? How much more time does he need?
Mowbray states that celtic are m,aking chances-so what it th ball doesn't into the net?
He has to go and go now, end of story.
22% win rate says it all GHe's nothing more than en english first division manager, all you people who say give him time and it will come right are living in dreamland; the guy is rank rotten and should be shown the door. end of.

  5. Stuart.........you post that you cannot remember Wattie doing too well in his first "2 years " back. Perhaps the following facts will assist your failing memory, if not a visit to the doctor is called for. Wattie returned on 10.01.2007. Season 2006/2007 was already lost due to his predecessor. The last trophy won, was won in May 2009. This gives Wattie at most 2 years and 4 months of footballing action since his return. During that period he has won the SPL once, the Scottish Cup twice, the Scottish League cup once and took his team to a European final. All this was done with very limited financial resources. I would suggest that this is in fact " doing very well". If your intention is to deflect away from the headline topic, at least get your facts right or stick to the old favourites, such as Rangers are skint or all Rangers fans are bigots.

  8. belief, 110%, courage, fight, heard it all before, but is anyone good enough to play FOOTBALL? NO, none can put the the ball in that net, the amount of excuses i've had for McGeady is unbelievable, did you know he's not a striker, he's a midfielder, so that explains five goals a season, what a genious.

  16. Just seen on sky sports news that he has a win percentage of 22% since becoming celtic manager hahaha. Just makes me laugh when all the tims were on here in the summer saying something special was going to happen now he was manager. It was going to be the greatest season in years.
A couple of months in and your calling for his head. Seems you are all about as loyal as he was when he told the west brom fans to stay loyal to the team and then jumped ship as soon as they were relegated. One big c.unt leading a team of c.unts supported by c.unts

  18. I'm a celtic fan and it sickens me that the club forced strachan out and replaced him with this idiot mowbray who knows sweet f*ck all about football and how to get the best out of his players. So far, this season has been the worst brand of football I have seen from celtic in years! strachan had passion & delivered 3 strait titles and it wouldve been a 4th had the players not screwed it up themselves....the players have been @#$%e since january this year when they had a 7 point lead and blew it. mowbray has now taken them backwards...so much for the celtic cr*p with mowbray being one of our own..he's a f*ckwit, sack him and hire someone competent, having a celtic background means @#$%e
