Strachan 'surprised' by Mowbray claims

Fri, 30 Oct 16:16:18 2009

Gordon Strachan has defended the quality of players he left Tony Mowbray at Celtic.

Hoops boss Mowbray has recently criticised the squad he inherited from Strachan, threatening an overhaul in the January transfer window.

But new Middlesbrough manager Strachan has expressed surprise at his successors claims, telling the Daily Record: "Yes, I'm surprised because there are some terrific players at that football club."

He added: "I don't want to comment on what Tony might have said but I will say this - I used to go to training and think to myself, 'I love watching this'.

"I loved watching some of these boys playing the game. I loved the boys with technical ability - the McGeadys, Maloneys, Nakamuras and Browns. I was so lucky to have so many good players to work with over my time there.

"In fact, I would set up the training sessions knowing fine well I couldn't wait to watch it or coach it.

"It was a pleasure to be on the same training pitch as these guys.

"I'm telling you - these are good players and good men."

  1. Quite right to most of the guys on this forum. WGS lost the league but that seems to have been catasotrophic and most Celtic fans must take the blame. The guy did a good job. From what I can see from a distance, Tony Mowbrey is all plenty talk and little action. I was hoping Celtic would qualify for the semis. Then it would have meant St Mirren only had to worry about St Johnstone!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. to all you Celtic fans willing to listen, Strachen lost 21 points from january to may and lost the league, yes mogga has started badly, but he's just started where Celtic left off.

  3. I'm a celtic fan and it sickens me that the club forced strachan out and replaced him with this idiot mowbray who knows sweet f*ck all about football and how to get the best out of his players. So far, this season has been the worst brand of football I have seen from celtic in years! strachan had passion & delivered 3 strait titles and it wouldve been a 4th had the players not screwed it up themselves....the players have been @#$%e since january this year when they had a 7 point lead and blew it. mowbray has now taken them backwards...so much for the celtic cr*p with mowbray being one of our own..he's a f*ckwit, sack him and hire someone competent, having a celtic background means @#$%e

  4. Ha ha. Is this comments from the same Celtic fans that said "Mowbray is one of our own". What ever that means.
You lot forced Strachan out, and now you moan about it. Look at the success he gave you. Do you really think that a man who talks down his players is going to have any success as a football mananager.
You could see last night the Celtic players are arguing with each other and blaming each other for mistakes, this has been rubbed off from Tony Mowbray's atitude to the players.
You are using the Rangers situation to stray away from the fact that you will struggle to win anything this year.
If you are hanging on to the feeling that Mowbray will be given a huge budget to spend on amazing players in January then dream on. He had a big budget when West Brom where promoted and look what happened there. Plus your board will never give hime as much as he wants.

  5. It's with great sadness that I report Celtic Park was broken into last night. The entire contents of the trophy room were stolen. Strathclyde police are believed to be looking for a man with a green carpet

  6. Oh Mowbray forgot to blame the Prime Minister and the President of the USA. And while we are at it why not blame Ben Laden and Al Qaeda too and just to be happy chuck in the IRA as well. But never himself. At least Strachen knew what he was doing and has won the club the SPL.

  11. Mowbray is making excuses for his own ineptitude. The man is not only a shockingly bad football manager, but
blaming the players is simply a cowards way out. I am sickened by this man. He's worse than John Barnes and Lou Macari combined.

  14. @#$%!! If anything you stiffled whatever creativity there was...the whole falling out with wee McGeady was over him wanting to be more creative while Strachan wanted the ball out wide with useless crosses thumped in to no-one.

  15. Nice one wee man, for someone who was castrated by people who know nothing, you deserve a medal.
