FA Cup - Non-league Histon stun Leeds

Eurosport - Sun, 30 Nov 20:36:00 2008

Blue Square Premier promotion chasers Histon won the biggest match in their history with a 1-0 FA Cup second-round victory over Leeds

Histon's Danny Wright, Leeds United's Rui Marques - 0

Matthew Langston scored the only goal of the game on Sunday in the 39th minute at a wet and wild Glassworld Stadium when he headed in Gareth Gwillim's cross.

Histon dominated the first half and could have gone into the break further ahead, but they had to withstand a barrage of pressure in the second half.

Lubomir Michalik twice came within a whisker of equalising for Leeds, first seeing his shot cannon back off a post then a fierce drive headed off the line by Jack Midson late on.

Notts County 1-1 Kettering Town

Kettering gave themselves the chance to cause another FA Cup upset after holding League Two side Notts County to a 1-1 draw at Meadow Lane.

The Blue Square Premier side were never overawed by the challenge and Iyseden Christie had already wasted a good chance when they went in front after 19 minutes.

Tricky winner Alfie Potter created the opening as he slid the ball through to Brett Solkhon and although goalkeeper Russell Hoult took the sting out of his shot, the ball trickled over the line.

County equalised after 35 minutes with a well worked move as substitute Jay Smith fed the ball into Jamie Forrester, who controlled it with his back to goal and set up the chance for Sean Canham.

Kettering finished the half strongly as Stephen Hunt cleared off the line from Guy Branston and Christie headed just wide, and they continued to create the better openings after the break.

John Thompson rescued County with a goal line clearance from Craig Westcarr but County might have won it after 67 minutes when Lee Harper blocked a shot from Delroy Facey and Canham blasted the rebound over the top.

  1. Well done Histon! It's what makes the FA Cup unique, the non-leaguers beating a league team. But put it into perspective Leeds are only a run of the mill 3rd division side after all despite their more illustrious past. Comments like those from dellautoservices are pathetic but typical of a lot of football followers, kick a once great club when its down. As a Leeds lad I'll stick to watching a proper game and go to Headingley to see the Rhinos!
