Hull's impressive ascent up the Coca-Cola Championship continued to gain momentum after a stunning Dean Windass goal gave them a 1-0 victory over Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday at the KC Stadium.
As a result of Windass' 33rd-minute effort, Phil Brown's Tigers are now four games unbeaten and sit in eighth place just one point shy of a play-off spot.
The same cannot be said of the Owls, who are now six games without a win and have failed to leapfrog Scunthorpe out of the relegation zone.
They could surely have no complaints, too, as Akpo Sodje's effort that struck the post apart, they failed to create any noteworthy chances.
Hull were little better in their attacking display but had enough quality when they needed it, and in Windass they had the match winner.
The 38-year-old had only been on the field for nine minutes when he scored from a 30-yard free-kick for his eighth goal of the season.
Brown said: "I thought it was all about the result.
"It wasn't going to be pretty for us. I think in the second half, where we'd earned the right to be in front, we earned the right to win the game.
"I'm a big stats man and they say we've had a lot of possession, a lot of chances, a lot of crosses and a lot of shots and we fully deserved the three points."
Wednesday counterpart Brian Laws said: "It was a bitty game.
"I thought we showed a lot of commitment and desire to get a result. I thought we looked reasonably comfortable and conceded a goal against the run of play.
"The only real quality that was in the game conspired to be the goal. We could have cut that out though. I didn't think we deserved to get beat. Neither side really carved out any clinical chances."
