Murphy: My legacy is secure

Eurosport - Tue, 30 Dec 15:25:00 2008

Shaun Murphy said he is now content with his career achievements after adding the UK Championship to the World Championship he won in 2005.

SNOOKER Shaun Murphy win the 2008-09 UK Championship - 0

Murphy took the UK title in Telford after a dramatic 10-9 victory over Marco Fu in the final on Sunday night to complete a remarkable turnaround in form from the Englishman.

Before the tournament Murphy had not won a match in a ranking event all season but he has now joined an elite group of players who have won the sport's two biggest events.

"No matter what happens in the rest of my life now, I've won the world title and the UK Championship, the two biggest tournaments in the sport," he said.

"Hopefully I've got more and more tournaments left in me in the years to come. But if I don't, I'll die happy.

"This is something I dreamed about as a child, to win this tournament and get my name on this trophy.

"No amount of money can buy you that name on that trophy."

As a result of the victory Murphy moves back up to number three in the provisional rankings while Fu enjoyed a big jump up to sixth.

Two-time world champion Mark Williams also looks in good shape to return to the top 16 with his quarter-final run moving him up to 12th.

  2. i notice how the previous champions such as higgins and osullivan who have previously
been fantastic ,last years championship it was all about murphy. Yes no matter how great a player they think they are....watch out cause often this course of great wins is never a guarantee that technique will not falter and a slip up is unfortunate as the pendulum either swings your way or it dosent, sometimes you can tell from the beginning who clearly has the upper hand. Although it can surprisingly tke a turn.

  5. Stephen Hendry is the greatest by a mile, only Ronnie's coke head cronies would deny it.
To be fair Hendry should retire. Ronnie should stop throwing matches as an excuse for not having the stamina to match Hendry's achievements.

  6. doyletony2000 and adamj you suggest I do not understand the game of snooker!

Possibly not but at least I do understand the word sarcasm, whoops! Of course there have only been 3 world championships in the last 16 years *wanders off whistling*

God you talk @#$% when it comes to snooker, you abviously no nothing about the game. You talk of how Ronnie has dominated the games for 16 years? are you on drugs, I think he is a disgrace to the game and should have been kicked out of the game years ago. Tell me 1 other Pro who conceeds a match just because things are not going his way, like he did to Hendry a few years back, and again this week against Joe Perry conceeding the just because he missed a pot. Nobody has dominated the game like Stephen Hendry has a true LEGEND of the game and the titles to prove it. Ronnie only has 3 world crowns

  8. Clearly you have no idea about this sport. Snooker was at it's peak in the 80's not the 90's when the likes of Jimmy White, Dennis Taylor, Steve Davis, Terry Griffiths Willy Thorne and the like dominated the sport. O'Sullivan became popular because he ended the era of dominace of the late 80's early 90's by Stephen Hendry as did Mark Williams albeit for a much shorter period of time. Stephen Hendry was just as dominant as Ronnie was but just not as exciting. Snooker is awful compared to how it was as there are no true characters in the sport anymore. They are just young pretenders to a golden age.

  9. Gilliam85 how right you are, it has been all about O’Sullivan the last 20 years. True he has only been a pro since 1992 (that’s 16 years, to save you the effort of working it out) but I think we can safely say that snooker didn’t exist pre 92. During these special 16 years he has won all three of the World Championships that have been held. It is amazing how he has managed to ensure that nobody else has even come close to capturing this ultimate snooker title since 92 … or before of course as snooker didn’t exist. During this time the extent of his achievement may be considered even greater when you remember that he has also won all 21 of the ranking events held. Absolutely amazing that he has not given any other player a sniff of a ranking tournament since 92.

To be honest, his dominance is that complete that I do not have any clue as to why other players even bother to pick up a cue knowing that they will always be easily and without a thought be pushed aside by the completely invincible Rocket.

Nobody before has ever dominated the game to the extent that Ronnie has and, I am sure you will readily agree, nobody will ever again be able to win the number of titles that Ronnie has amassed during these 16 amazing and absolutely flawless years.

Snooker was started by Ronnie and, once he hangs up his cue, snooker will be finished by Ronnie, Gilliam85 knows this to be a fact.

Well done Shaun and Marco. A great match.

  13. Marco would have been unaware of the foul on the green as after hitting the ball, he turned his head if I remember correctly to look whether the cue ball was on line to hit the red. He would certainly have called the foul if he felt it, as he's a real gentleman as is Shaun Murphy.

Snooker is less popular these days because of the way it's managed and promoted. You only need to compare with the sport 10-20 years ago, to realise what has gone wrong. I hope this gets rectified soon, especially to take advantage of the interests at China and other parts of the world these days.
