Derby boss Paul Jewell has revealed Newcastle are not prepared to increase their bid for Giles Barnes.
Jewell confirmed on Tuesday a verbal offer from the Magpies for the 19-year-old had been rejected - and insisted the midfielder would be going nowhere unless County's valuation was met.
With the transfer window closing tonight, a move to Tyneside now looks unlikely for Barnes - who has previously been linked with Tottenham - unless United change their minds and up the offer.
Jewell, speaking after Wednesday night's 1-1 Barclays Premier League draw at home to Manchester City, said: "They said they wouldn't be coming back with more than they've offered - which I'm pleased to hear."
The Rams manager is hoping to bring one of January's longest-running transfer sagas to a conclusion by finally completing a deal for Rangers goalkeeper Roy Carroll - after the Clydesdale Bank Premier League leaders signed Neil Alexander from Ipswich.
"I think Rangers have signed a goalkeeper now, so I'm expecting Roy to be a Derby player by 12 o'clock," he said.
Jewell admitted there was a possibility "one or two players might be going out", but further loan deals now appear out of the question.
He explained: "I spoke to the chief executive of the Premier League, because we are only allowed two English loans.
"With Danny Mills out for the rest of the season, I thought we might have been allowed another loan - but the Premier League have refused the request. I'm disappointed."
New arrivals appear likely at Eastlands too, after Sven-Goran Eriksson revealed he hoped to sign at least one new striker.
"I think so, yes," he said.
"I haven't spoken to anyone after the match. But all morning and half of the afternoon I have been talking, talking, talking - and it looked very positive two-and-a-half hours before the game."
That striker could be FC Basle's 19-year-old Ecuadorian Felipe Caicedo, who featured for his country at the Copa America last year.
A goalscorer would certainly appear to top Eriksson's shopping list on Wednesday night's showing.
They may have come from behind, but the game should have been over by the time Kenny Miller's shot took a huge deflection off Sun Jihai and beat the wrong-footed Joe Hart.
Teenage striker Daniel Sturridge at least gave reason for optimism, marking his full debut with a first Premier League goal - following his weekend strike in the FA Cup at Sheffield United.
Martin Petrov, a thorn in Derby's side down the left channel all night, delivered a low ball across the area - and the 18-year-old stole in ahead of his marker to fire past Lewis Price.
Eriksson will treat the youngster with kid gloves but believes he has a real talent on his hands.
He added: "I don't think he was especially tired but I took him off because I don't want to use him too much too quickly - because he has been in full training for only two weeks.
"He has been away for six months, so I have to be careful with him; I don't want to see him injured again.
"He will get better and better during this season, and I am sure you will see the real Sturridge next season."
