The 20-year-old links up with the Bees after making only three starts for Brighton, the last of them in Tuesday's 1-0 defeat at Northampton.
"Nathan has found his opportunities limited, he wants to start games but we couldn't guarantee that and felt it was right to let him move," said Seagulls manager Dean Wilkins.
Elder joined Brighton in a £10,000 switch from Billericay Town in December 2006.
Meanwhile, unsettled skipper Dean Hammond is thought to be in talks with Colchester over a £200,000-plus move, while Wilkins has been linked with Chesterfield captain Peter Leven.
