Premier League - West Brom deny Hull victory

West Brom twice came from behind to salvage a 2-2 draw with Hull City in a pulsating Premier League encounter at the KC Stadium.

Phil Brown's side were looking to put an end to a six-game losing streak in the Premier League and took a first-half lead through Bernard Mendy"s fine individual effort in the 44th minute.

The Baggies then hit back after the break through Jay Simpson, after intricate play from James Morrison on the edge of the Hull box found the striker in space in the 53rd minute.

But as both sides pressed for a crucial victory, further gaps were exploited; Mendy again caused havoc down the right before feeding Craig Fagan, whose diving header restored the Tigers' lead.

Four minutes later, and parity was once again restored as Chris Brunt converted a penalty after Borja Valero was brought down by Kamil Zayatte.

With the Premier League's two weakest defences on show, there was always likely to be an abundance of chances for both sides, and so it proved, but there might have been more goals had it not been for some less than clinical finishing.

After a turgid opening 20 minutes, Hull began to stamp their authority on the game with Scott Carson looking unconvincing in attempting to deal with a number of crosses.

As early as the seventh minute, Carson horribly scuffed a clearance which, luckily for the keeper, landed at the feet of Robert Koren and not Fagan.

Then two aberrations from the keeper in a matter of minutes, as first he remained rooted to his line, allowing Fagan to shoot over the bar from 12 yards, then punching a Richard Garcia cross into the back of Gianni Zuiverloon.

But Albion had the first good chance to break the deadlock in the 28th minute when Paul Robinson's raking long ball from the left was chested down neatly by Marc-Antoine Fortune into the path of his strike partner Simpson, who recklessly blazed his shot over.

An unbelievable miss followed at the other end, Garcia, who found himself unmarked ten yards out, managed to scoop his header over the bar from ten yards out after Kevin Kilbane's pin-point cross from the left.

But on the stroke of half-time, a moment of magic by Mendy gave the hosts the lead they deserved; the midfielder cut inside at pace from the right, leaving Brunt in his wake, before beating Robinson and Abdoulaye Meite and coolly rounding Carson to slot home.

Carson redeemed himself with a point-blank save from Andy Dawson's header in the 48th minute, following an inswinging corner by Dean Marney.

The home side were then made to pay as Morrison's jinking run inside the Hull box, resulted in Simpson incisively sliding his shot past Matt Duke to level the scores five minutes later.

Hull refused to settle for a point and more fine work from Mendy in the 69th minute culminated in a whipped cross from the right, which Fagan converted with a clinical diving header.

But again the Baggies hit back when Koren was brought down by Zayatte in the box, leaving Brunt to strike his penalty close to Duke, but with sufficient power to equalise for a second time.

Hull drop to 11th place in the Premier League, while West Brom remain rooted to the bottom of the table albeit on goal difference.

  3. Well done the lads; good to win a premiership point again after quite a tough time with little going their way. What's the bullard story? Good at last to see phil brown concentrating on football again, rather than his media career; i am sure with them all pulling together the tigers will come again as the season progresses; but probably after the chelsea game (though i will be there to cheer them on)??!!
